This is a locum appointment for a period of six months. The post is for a 10 PA locum appointment for a Consultant Paediatric Anaesthetist. The successful applicant will be offered a six-month contract.
The post will deliver 10 PAs supporting the paediatric anaesthetic team at the Leeds Children's Hospital (LGI site) in Leeds.
The ideal candidate should hold accreditation in the FRCA in the Royal College of Anaesthetics or equivalent, and should be on the Specialist Register, or within six months of being admitted to the Register for trainees if currently in a training programme within the UK or have references which have been authorised by the Deputy Medical Director and Clinical Director.
Applicants should have established skills in paediatric anaesthesia and have undertaken at least 12 months advanced training in this area. Excellent communication and team working skills, a strong commitment to teaching and service development are essential.

Leeds Children's Hospital
- To work with other consultant colleagues in the provision of a comprehensive Anaesthetic service in the Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust.
- To develop and/or consolidate expertise in Paediatric Anaesthesia.
- To maintain and expand the excellence of teaching and research already established within the Trust.
- To support service plans for the specialty, taking account of the changes in clinical practice and new technologies available.
- To participate in and progress Clinical Governance.
- The Trust as a teaching hospital recognises the importance of links with the University of Leeds, School of Medicine for the undergraduate teaching and all Consultant and medical staff are required to provide an appropriate contribution to the undergraduate teaching programme.
- The post-holder will be required to participate in the undergraduate teaching programme for the School of Medicine, University of Leeds, which is organised on a speciality or clinical area basis.
- The post-holder will be required to collaborate with clinical colleagues to deliver appropriate undergraduate teaching in accordance with the Trust contract with the NHS Executive in association with the University of Leeds.
- The appointee will be expected, with colleagues, to also contribute to the teaching of postgraduates, including the teaching programme for SpRs in anaesthesia in the Yorkshire Deanery.
- Should have completed at least 12 months in a recognised training programme in paediatric anaesthesia.
- Evidence of the ability to carry out medical research.
- Previous experience of supervising research by junior staff.
- Previous attendance on Appraisal Techniques and Small Group Teaching Workshops.
- Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors.
- Understanding of current issues in the NHS.
- Attendance at recognised management course.
- Well organised and skilled in good time management.
- Effective interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrate ability to relate to and work within a team.
- Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in paediatric anaesthesia.
- Specifically, he/she must demonstrate advanced training in paediatric anaesthesia.
- Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances.
- Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice.
- Eligibility to work in the UK.
- Is up to date and fit to practise safely.
- All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written & spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients & colleagues demonstrated by one of the following:
- Applicants have undertaken undergraduate medical training in English. OR
- Achieved the minimum score of 7 across all 4 of the following categories in the academic International English Language Testing System IELTS in a single sitting within 24 months at time of application: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. An overall minimum score of 7.5 OR
- Achieved the minimum Grade B across all 4 of the following categories in the Occupational English Test OET in medicine in a single sitting within 24 months at time of application: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.
- Medically fit to fulfil ALL aspects of the post, and to be able to respond quickly to emergencies, as necessary. Meets professional health requirements in line with GMC standards/Good Medical Practice.
- Hold full GMC Registration with a license to practice.
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via: CCT proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview CESR or European Community Right.
This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.
