Job Title: Consultant Adult Community Specialist

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Consultant Adult Community Specialist to join our team at West Suffolk. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing a Consultant Ophthalmology service for in-patients, day cases, and out-patients, with continuing responsibility for the patients, their care, and for the effective functioning of the department.

Main Responsibilities:
  • To provide a high-quality Consultant Ophthalmology service, including diagnosis and treatment of general ophthalmic conditions, including phacoemulsification cataract surgery.
  • To take part in the Consultant on-call rota and provide emergency cover as required.
  • To carry out teaching duties and participate in the education programme of junior medical staff, nurses, and AHPs.
  • To provide supervision and training to junior hospital doctors and participate in clinical audit, evidence-based practice, and clinical governance within the department.
  • To participate in regional sub-specialty audit and clinical governance and actively engage in continuing professional development (CPD).
Person Specification:
  • MBBS or equivalent qualification.
  • FRC Ophth or equivalent qualification.
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility for entry within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview.
  • GMC Registration with a Licence to Practise.
  • MRCP qualification.
  • MD or PhD qualification.
Clinical Experience:
  • Proven clinical experience in diagnosis and treatment of general ophthalmic conditions, including thorough training in phacoemulsification cataract surgery.
  • Ability to deal with ophthalmic emergencies.
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.
  • Subspecialty expertise complementary to the departmental needs, with a particular interest in neuro-ophthalmology and primary care.
Management and Administrative Experience:
  • Ability to provide leadership in developing clinical services and ensure their quality.
  • Evidence of participation in clinical audit activities.
  • Understanding of mechanisms required when dealing with concerns about professional practice.
  • Ability to manage teams and participate in management courses.
  • Willingness to be ophthalmology College Tutor and lead clinician in rotation with colleagues.
Personality, Teaching Experience, and Research Experience:
  • Experience of and interest in supervision and training of junior medical staff (FY1, FY2, ST1/2, SpRs).
  • Experience of teaching healthcare professionals and ability to teach clinical skills.
  • Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems and publications in peer-reviewed journals.
Other Attributes:
  • Ability to work in a team and communicate effectively with patients, relatives, and healthcare professionals.
  • Good interpersonal skills and a caring attitude to patients.
  • Enquiring, critical approach to work and commitment to CPD and clinical governance.
  • Able to meet the travel requirements of the post and have access to a car or current UK driving licence.
Knowledge and Skills:
  • Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English, adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues.
