About the Department

Position Overview

The successful candidate will engage in the BioDiMoBot initiative, aimed at developing a sophisticated system for the autonomous assessment of aquatic biodiversity and ecological health. This project focuses on creating a cutting-edge measurement system to monitor biodiversity and understand the factors contributing to ecosystem decline. By employing novel biohybrid sensors, the project will evaluate both organismic and environmental stress levels. The BioDiMoBot's capability for long-term, automated data collection will yield valuable insights into the ecological conditions of aquatic habitats.

The role involves designing, developing, and implementing frameworks for deep learning, computer vision, image processing, and data analysis tailored to the BioDiMoBot system. Key responsibilities include:
  • Creating and training extensive deep learning models for species identification and environmental stress evaluation.
  • Integrating these models into the robotic system.
  • Processing and analyzing substantial datasets of images and underwater acoustics.
  • Deploying AI solutions for real-time data collection and interpretation.
Collaboration with European partners is anticipated, and the candidate will be encouraged to explore innovative problem-solving approaches using various deep learning techniques. Model verification will be conducted through benchmark datasets and real-world testing in diverse aquatic environments, requiring a proactive engagement in experimental work alongside biologists and other stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct individual and collaborative research projects under the guidance of the Principal Investigator.
  • Design and develop advanced deep learning and image processing frameworks.
  • Communicate complex technical material effectively to diverse audiences.
  • Prepare and present research findings to various stakeholders.
  • Publish high-quality research outputs in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Assist in developing research objectives and proposals.
  • Identify new research areas and extend the research portfolio.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to address challenges affecting research goals.
  • Plan and manage research activities and resources.
  • Provide training in research methodologies to peers and students.
  • Engage in student supervision and assessment.
  • Contribute to a collegial and respectful working environment.
  • Participate in professional development activities.
This position is funded for a fixed term of 24 months.
