Position Overview

Are you a qualified or seasoned nursing professional eager to embark on a career in Primary Care? Tower Hamlets GP Care Group is pleased to present a unique opportunity for a fixed-term training position, designed to enhance your skills in a General Practice context while pursuing a Post Graduate Diploma in Practice Nursing at City University of London. You will receive guidance from our dedicated Nursing Development Open Doors clinical tutors throughout your training journey.

Our established program has been successfully operating since 2008, with numerous participants advancing to prominent roles such as Lead Nurses, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, and Educators within Tower Hamlets. Our experienced educators are committed to supporting your transition into primary care.

The costs associated with university tuition will be fully covered.

The selected candidate will be employed by a designated GP practice and will collaborate with the entire Practice Team. Your schedule will include a blend of clinical work and dedicated study time, arranged flexibly to accommodate both the practice's needs and your educational requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Enhancing public health outcomes for patients and residents through initiatives such as vaccinations, screenings, and health promotion.
  • Delivering care to individuals with complex and chronic conditions, including both physical and mental health challenges, to help them maintain wellness and avoid hospitalization.
  • Providing support to families and caregivers managing individuals with mental or physical health issues.
  • Upholding and enhancing the esteemed reputation of Tower Hamlets as a nurturing and educational community of healthcare professionals working collaboratively.

The Open Doors team offers the following resources:

  • Bi-weekly visits in the first year to aid in developing clinical competencies, tailored to the individual nurse's needs.
  • Weekly half-day action learning groups in the first year, transitioning to monthly sessions in the second year, providing additional training and fostering camaraderie among colleagues.
  • Built-in preceptorship support for newly qualified nurses as part of the program.

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Provide travel health advice and administer vaccinations as needed.
  • Assess and manage patients with uncomplicated wounds, including suture and clip removal.
  • Offer guidance to patients seeking information on reproductive and sexual health.

Communication Skills

  • Effectively communicate within multidisciplinary teams, patients, and caregivers.
  • Identify and address barriers to communication proactively.
  • Advocate for patients and colleagues' perspectives when necessary.

Administrative Duties

  • Stay informed about the broader primary care system, including Primary Care Networks and Integrated Care Systems.
  • Maintain accurate patient records using agreed-upon coding systems.
  • Participate in practice audits and research initiatives as required.

General Expectations

  • Maintain annual registration with the Nursing & Midwifery Council and uphold professional standards.
  • Ensure compliance with all statutory regulations.
  • Exhibit professionalism in attire and conduct towards patients and colleagues.
  • Engage in continuous professional development and participate in practice meetings and training sessions.
  • Work within defined limitations and recognize personal boundaries.

Qualifications and Experience

  • A degree-level education with a First Class or 2:1 qualification.
  • Registration with the Nursing & Midwifery Council.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of nursing theory and best practices relevant to newly qualified nurses.
  • Familiarity with primary healthcare and General Practice.
  • Understanding of equality and diversity principles and their application in practice.

  • Demonstrate empathy and a caring approach towards patients and their families, ensuring dignity and respect at all times.
