Senior Research Engineer

The Manufacturing Technology Centre is seeking a highly skilled Senior Research Engineer to lead the development of innovative technologies and projects. As a key member of the Digital Engineering Team, you will be responsible for delivering technical projects and providing strategic direction to the team.

Main Responsibilities:

  1. Lead the technical delivery of projects, ensuring that work meets or exceeds customer requirements and is delivered within agreed budgets and timescales.
  2. Provide technical leadership and support to project teams, ensuring that projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards.
  3. Undertake innovative research and development work, focused on technology readiness levels 3+ and demonstrating industrial project delivery.
  4. Support Senior Managers in the identification, technical specification, and delivery of new and novel technology capability into the MTC, customers, or industrial member's premises.
  5. Take overall ownership of project delivery, ensuring compliance with all relevant standards, technical support of commissioning, management of project budget and deliverables.
  6. Generate key project and strategic initiatives in alignment with the theme's strategy, actively supporting to develop the theme business and technology strategy in a specific area of expertise.

Person Specification:

  1. Demonstrable substantial and recognised expertise in a specific area relevant to the theme, with expert knowledge of the manufacturing sector and deep understanding of manufacturing systems and technologies.
  2. Committed to working collaboratively and networking effectively, able to recognise the contribution of others and work with a one MTC mindset.
  3. Pragmatic hands-on experience, providing problem-solving approach and willing to physically participate in completion of work when required.
  4. Self-motivated and a self-starter, with the ability to work autonomously to meet deadlines, budgets and quality expectations, both within a team, or independently.

Essential Skills/Qualifications/Experience:

  1. Strong knowledge of the advantages and disadvantages of various technologies and how different technologies may be more appropriate to specific inspection applications.
  2. Degree calibre engineer, technologist, scientist or mathematician, ideally working towards professional registration, with a Chartered professional qualification desirable.
  3. The ability to apply this knowledge to lead validation trials to prove a system's capability for an application.
  4. Provide strong technical leadership and support project teams in the delivery of work.
  5. Strong knowledge of the manufacturing sector and understanding of manufacturing systems and technologies.
  6. Experience working in R&D or project-based environments.
  7. Demonstration of experience in providing technical leadership, knowledge transfer and strategic direction.
