Walsall, Walsall, United Kingdom Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust Full time

Position Overview

Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust is seeking to appoint two Lead Clinical Fellows (LCF) to join our esteemed Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care.

The successful candidates will collaborate with our dedicated Anaesthetists to deliver a high-quality, innovative, and professional Anaesthetic service across a diverse array of surgical specialties. Initially, the appointees will cover the First on-call rota for a period of three months, with the possibility of transitioning to the registrar level rota for the following nine months. There will be opportunities for professional development through ST3 modules, including Critical Care and Obstetrics, as well as exposure to Colorectal, Bariatrics, Pre-assessment, and Chronic Pain. Additionally, participation in Second on-calls for Maternity and ICU will be available over the subsequent two years. The appointees will have the chance to engage in quality improvement initiatives, research projects, and educational activities tailored to their individual interests.

Main Responsibilities

The key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Providing Anaesthetic and ICU coverage as required by the service.
  • Participating in the first on-call rota during the initial phase of the placement.
  • Managing elective operating theatres, ICU, and emergency theatres.
  • Handling Second on-call duties for ITU and Maternity.

About Our Department

The Anaesthesia Department is located within the Trust's Outpatient facilities, conveniently positioned near surgical daycase and Family Health and Diagnostics theatre complexes. The department features multiple shared rooms for consultant office space, an open-plan secretarial area, and an integrated kitchenette, creating a pleasant working environment with easy access to Anaesthetic secretaries. Hot desking areas are available close to Theatres and the ICU, along with a dedicated lecture/seminar room and kitchen facilities.

To qualify for these positions, candidates must be eligible for GMC registration with a Licence to Practice and ideally have completed postgraduate training at the Core Training level in their country of origin.

All applicants should be aware that their proficiency in written and spoken English will be assessed during the selection process to ensure it meets the standards required for the role.

Job Responsibilities

The Lead Clinical Fellow will spend six months working on the General Critical Care Unit, with the potential for an extension based on staffing needs and satisfactory performance. The role can be tailored to align with the individual interests and training requirements of the candidate, which may include time spent in the operating theatre to maintain Anaesthetic skills.

Educational Support

Each clinical fellow will be assigned a trained Educational Supervisor (ES) who will oversee their progress and serve as a mentor for training and development needs. Regular meetings with the ES will be expected, both formally (every three months) to document progress and informally as often as possible.

During day shifts, the clinical fellow will receive full supervision from consultants, while overnight supervision will be provided by a resident senior trainee/middle grade and an on-call ITU consultant.
