Job Duties

We are seeking a senior pharmacy support specialist to join our inpatient dispensary team at Southampton General Hospital.

The pharmacy dispensary is responsible for providing inpatient and discharge medications to a diverse patient population at Southampton General Hospital. You will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and pharmacy support specialists to deliver exceptional service to our patients. Strong communication skills are essential, along with the ability to work accurately in a fast-paced environment.

Our support specialists typically work Monday to Friday, starting at 9 AM and concluding their shifts at designated times. Additionally, support specialists in the inpatient dispensary are required to work at least one late shift per week, beginning later in the morning and finishing by 7 PM.

Weekend shifts are also part of the rota, currently scheduled at a frequency of no more than one shift every six weeks.

Your primary responsibilities in the dispensary will include:

  • Supervising and mentoring pharmacy support specialists.
  • Producing labels and dispensing medications for patients during their hospital stay and upon discharge.
  • Assisting at the pharmacy reception, addressing inquiries from nurses and patients, and relaying information to the appropriate personnel (pharmacists/technicians).
  • Contributing to the management of departmental stock, including ordering, receiving, and maintaining the medications utilized by the dispensary.
  • Operating the dispensing robot to retrieve medications.
  • Participating in the Clinical Trials dispensary, where you will have the opportunity to dispense medications for patients undergoing innovative treatments.

Candidates must possess, or be in the process of obtaining, a GPhC approved qualification (level 2 or higher).

Required Qualifications / Training

Essential

  • 2 GCSEs or equivalent grades A* - C or 4-9 in English and Mathematics (for qualifications obtained outside the UK, evidence of equivalent standards must be provided during the interview).
  • NVQ Level 2 in Pharmacy or another GPhC approved qualification for pharmacy support staff or equivalent experience.
  • Supervisory qualification or demonstrable experience in a supervisory role.

Desirable Qualifications

  • GCSEs in science-related or other relevant subjects.

Relevant Experience

Essential

  • Proficiency in using information technology in a professional or educational setting.

  • Experience in stock management, including receiving, maintaining, and issuing stock.
