Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Composite Development Engineer to join our team at Dowty, a GE Aerospace company. As a key member of our Integrated Project Team, you will support the development of composite process technology for a novel composite rotor structure.

Your primary focus will be on hands-on process development and definition, working closely with the Materials and Process group, Design, and Manufacturing teams. You will be responsible for setting up the line to produce test hardware, supporting production of test articles, and providing input on process improvements.

Key responsibilities include:

  1. Developing and demonstrating individual operations of the proposed process, including low maturity composite material and process technologies.
  2. Providing design for manufacturing feedback during the part design phase.
  3. Supporting the low rate production of test hardware, including hands-on support on the line and characterizing parts produced by various techniques.

We are looking for a candidate with a strong background in composite process development and manufacturing, particularly with RTM and dry fibre preforming. Experience with process improvement, material development, and low TRL/MRL technology development is also essential.

Requirements
  1. A relevant Engineering degree - Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or equivalent.
  2. Composite Process Development/Manufacturing experience - particularly with RTM and dry fibre preforming.
  3. Demonstrated experience of process improvement.
  4. Material development experience (carbon fabric, resin, adhesive, binder, bond primers).
  5. Low TRL/MRL technology development experience.
  6. Experience with Aerospace quality systems (in development and/or production) - particularly on rotatives (engines, rotors).
  7. Six Sigma, Lean or other process control/improvement techniques.
  8. Composite part characterisation (mechanical test, microscopy, volume fraction measurement).
  9. Composite metrology and NDT.
  10. Composite Design/Design for Manufacture experience.
  11. Tool design - particularly in Catia V5.
  12. Tool procurement.
  13. Tool rapid prototyping (3D printing, simple machining, composite tooling layup).

Security Clearance
