Job Role

In this role, you will deliver extensive technical support in riverine geomorphology to internal stakeholders and collaborators. Your contributions will be vital in advancing several prominent river restoration initiatives across the region. Furthermore, you will offer expert advice on Flood Risk Activity Permits and Water Abstraction Licenses, aiding in the enhancement of ecosystem resilience and wellbeing throughout the area.

Our organization promotes flexible working arrangements. You will be assigned to the nearest office to your residence and will need to participate in regular meetings, training sessions, and one-on-one discussions with your supervisor, all of which will be scheduled in advance.

About Us

You will become a part of the Hydrology, Geomorphology, and Water Resources Management Team, operating within our Flood and Water Management Department. Our team is a large, multi-disciplinary group serving the region. You will engage with some of the most significant rivers, contributing to practical solutions that address the pressing Nature and Climate Crisis.

Key Responsibilities

  • Analyze and interpret scientific data, providing high-quality information to support decision-making and environmental protection.
  • Review related licensing applications and submit informed comments, ensuring compliance with current policies to promote sustainable development.
  • Advise on adherence to the Water Framework Directive and other pertinent legislation.
  • Serve as a technical advisor on river restoration, bioengineering, and natural flood management strategies.
  • Contribute technical expertise to flood risk management, licensing, enforcement, and sustainable water abstraction projects.
  • Support the development of geomorphological practices focused on sustainable resource management.
  • Provide assistance on complex geomorphological challenges to colleagues.
  • Participate in the formulation and execution of emergency plans related to drought and flooding scenarios.
  • Promote best practices in health and safety, ensuring compliance with relevant policies and standards.
  • Engage in response activities to environmental events.
  • Uphold health and safety responsibilities pertinent to the role.
  • Commit to the mission of Natural Resources Wales, understanding its operational framework.
  • Focus on personal development through effective use of your development plan.
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties aligned with the role's level.

Who You Are – Qualifications and Skills

Applications will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Degree in a relevant scientific discipline (e.g., physical geography, environmental science, or civil engineering).
  • Membership in a relevant professional body (e.g., CIWEM or the Institution of Civil Engineers), working towards registration.
  • Demonstrated competence in geomorphological science with practical experience in applying methods and techniques.
  • Strong understanding of hydro-morphological elements of the Water Framework Directive, with the ability to prepare technical reports.
  • Capability to communicate technical knowledge to non-specialists.
  • Willingness to engage in fieldwork in challenging environments.
  • Full UK driving license.

Welsh Language Requirements

  • Essential: – ability to pronounce Welsh and use basic expressions.
