Consultant Microbiologist

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Consultant Microbiologist to join our team at The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust. As a key member of our Microbiology department, you will play a vital role in providing clinical advisory services, infection prevention and control advice, and antimicrobial stewardship expertise to our patients and staff.
Key Responsibilities- Liaise with clinicians, hospital staff, and general practitioners to diagnose, manage, and prevent infection.
- Provide positive blood culture ward rounds, including critical care rounds, to review the most unwell patients.
- Work with the antimicrobial pharmacist to review key antimicrobial prescribing decisions and provide support to acute admissions areas.
- Authorise and interpret laboratory results, ensuring that professional standards are maintained in the laboratory.
- Develop and implement policies for the use of antimicrobials in our trust, supporting antimicrobial stewardship and attending relevant committee meetings.
- Participate in the planning of pathology services, collaborating with other Consultant Pathologists within our trust.
- Contribute to audit activities, implementing changes following audit findings.
- Participate in the Trust's Undergraduate Medical Training Programme and postgraduate teaching programmes for medical, laboratory, and nursing staff.
- Develop relevant research interests, with laboratory space available for projects.
- GMC registration.
- FRCPath or equivalent qualification.
- Higher Level (or equivalent) training in Clinical Microbiology, including infection prevention, with CCT in Microbiology or a dual CCT in Microbiology & Infectious Diseases.
- Ability to work well in a multidisciplinary team and maintain good relations with contacts.
- Experience of audit and the implementation of change following audit.
- Understanding of and ability to demonstrate influence strategically, work collaboratively, and drive for improvement.
- Knowledge of principles of antimicrobial stewardship.
