About the Role

The Casualty Reduction Officer will play a crucial role in reducing the number of casualties on the roads of Sussex. As a key member of the Operations Command team, you will be responsible for providing a dedicated enforcement and education resource to support the various Casualty Reduction initiatives undertaken by the Police Service and partner agencies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct proactive patrols and tasked activity on the road networks of Sussex, focusing on Fatal 5+ offences and KSI reduction strategies.
  • Manage enquiries received from other partners, including the Collisions Process Unit and external referrals, and conduct eyesight tests and fitness to drive assessments as needed.
  • Plan and deliver Road Safety Enforcement activity in line with NPCC/Tispol calendars and a defined road safety strategy.
  • Provide help, support, and information to the public to encourage them to review and improve their driving skills.
  • Plan interventions based on evidenced reports and target high-risk offenders through proactive and robust enforcement action.
  • Support the Abandoned Vehicles Officer in reviewing submissions and authorizing the disposal of abandoned vehicles.
  • Prepare evidential files for court and liaise with the Crown Prosecution Service.
  • Support colleagues in the Investigations Team with enquiries and arrests to assist their investigations.
  • Attend public engagement events to present information on road safety themes.
  • Manage the investigative process using police systems and maintain detailed reports.
  • Form and maintain relationships with key partners to deliver collaborative goals.

Requirements

  • Completed probationary period and initial training modules.
  • Experience in delivering roadside enforcement and knowledge of Road Traffic legislation.
  • Desirable: Standard Response Driver course, Initial Phase Pursuit & fast road training, and knowledge of Road Safety Partnership capabilities and business.
  • Ability to work alone and as part of a team, prioritize tasks, and manage time effectively.
  • Knowledge of intelligence gathering and dissemination processes and related activities.
