**Learning Support Assistant (Term Time only)**

The appointment will be reviewed on a yearly basis and will be required only for as long as is determined necessary for the child/children in question.

**Responsible to**:
Principal/Learning Support Co-ordinator

**Purpose of the job**:
To assist in the support and integration of children with educational needs and physical disabilities within Slemish College.

**Hours**:
To Be Confirmed

**Rate of Pay**:
£21,575 - £21,968 (pro rata)

**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ROLES**

**Supporting the Pupil**

Drawing on knowledge of various forms of special needs, to develop an understanding of the specific needs of the child/ren concerned.

Taking into account the special needs involved, to aid the child/ren to learn as effectively as possible both in group situations and on his/her own by, for example:

- Clarifying and explaining instructions
- Ensuring child is able to use equipment and materials provided
- Motivating and encouraging child as required
- Assisting in weak areas e.g. language, behaviour, reading, spelling,

handwriting/presentation etc;
- Helping pupils to concentrate on and finish work set;
- Meeting physical needs as required whilst encouraging independence;
- Liaising with class teacher devising complementary learning activities.

To establish a supportive relationship with the child/ren concerned.

To encourage acceptance and integration of the child with special needs.

To develop methods of promoting/reinforcing children’s self-worth.

Attending to the personal needs of the students e.g. toilet management.

Assist students in moving around school, where required.

**Supporting the Teacher**

To assist with class teacher (and other professionals as appropriate), in the development of a suitable programme of support for child/ren with special needs.

In conjunction with the class teacher and/or other professionals to develop a system of recording child’s progress.

To contribute to the maintenance of child/ren’s progress records.

To participate in the evaluation of the support programme.

To provide regular feedback about the child to the teacher.

**Supporting the School**

Where appropriate, to develop a relationship to foster links between home and school.

To liaise, advise and consult with other members of the team supporting the child/ren when asked to do so.

To contribute to reviews of the students’ progress.

To attend relevant in-service training.

To be aware of school procedures, policies and confidential issues linked to home/student/teacher/school work, and appropriately maintain confidentiality.

Any other tasks as directed by the Principal which fall within the purview of the post.

**Salary**: From £21,575.00 per year
