**Purpose of the role**

The Schools of King Edward VI in Birmingham (“the Foundation”) is one of the most significant educational charities in this country. King Edward’s School was founded in 1552, and now in the 21st century the Foundation runs fourteen schools - two independent fee-paying schools, six selective academies and six non-selective academies, and there are plans for ongoing growth.

The King Edward VI Academy Trust Birmingham (“the Academy Trust”) was established in 2017 and is made up of the twelve academies outlined above. Our overarching mission is “to make Birmingham the best place to be educated in the UK”.

We are looking to appoint a Head of Risk and Compliance to support the Foundation and Academy Trust with all aspects of Risk and Compliance. Some of the key responsibilities of this role are, but not limited to, designing and delivering a Foundation and Academy Trust-wide Risk and Compliance Strategy, acting as the Foundation and Academy Trust’s Data Protection Officer (DPO), coordinating the activity of Data Protection Leads (DPLs) within each of our schools and taking ownership and oversight of the Foundation and Academy Trust’s suite of policies and approach to risk management. Head of Risk and Compliance will provide a key link between the central Risk and Compliance function and the schools across the Foundation and Academy Trust.

The successfully appointed applicant will have substantial experience of risk and compliance within an organisational setting as well as experience of project management, planning and delivering against organisational objectives. Experience of being a nominated Data Protection Officer is desirable but not essential.

**Responsibilities & Duties**:

- To ensure that all risk and compliance systems, processes and practices are consistent across all of the Academies, recognising best practice and thereby realising maximum efficiencies.
- To work with Academy-based staff to ensure any remedial action is undertaken promptly in response to risk and compliance issues.
- To take ownership and oversight of the Foundation and Academy Trust’s approach to risk management and utilisation of the risk management system.
- To work with the Department Heads to develop Foundation and Academy Trust-wide contracts, policies, procedures, templates, and guidance.
- To draft, monitor and review policies for timely submission for Academy Trust Board approval.
- To maintain easily accessible and auditable records.
- To liaise with the Foundation and Academy Trust’s legal advisors and other third parties such as internal and external auditors, the Information Commissioners Office, Ofsted and the Education and Skills Funding Agency.
- To compile relevant reports for Foundation and Academy Trust Committees and Board, and to present these when required.
- To review and make recommendations on due diligence documentation for new Academies joining the Academy Trust.
- To develop systems for the sharing of policies across the Foundation’s schools.
- To ensure that all entities of the Foundation and Academy Trust have up-to-date and compliant policies on their websites.
- To contribute to relevant committees and working groups.
- To play a full part in the life of the academies’ communities and support the Academy Trust ethos.
- To work flexibly and support occasional evening and weekend events, the annual Entrance Test and to participate fully in academy life.

Substantial experience of risk and compliance within an organisational setting

Experience of project management, planning and delivering against organisational objectives.

Experience of using relevant systems to manage risk and compliance activities effectively.

Communication skills sufficient to:

- converse at ease with senior managers, academy staff and contractors,
- provide advice to such colleagues and external contacts and
- undertake complex negotiations.

Literacy skills sufficient to write succinct and professional management papers and reports.

Numeracy and analytical skills sufficient to be able to prepare reports and manage detailed budgets.
