The Kent Archives and Local History Service sits within the Kent Libraries, Registration and Archives Service run by Kent County Council. It manages a large part of Kent’s recorded heritage on behalf of the people of Kent. The collections go back to the eighth century and are one of the biggest and richest accumulations of archives of any local authority in the country. Working with historical archives is truly a job with a difference. They are the raw data from which history is written, individuals trace their roots and local communities find and reinforce their identities. Some of our books and documents are very old; a great many are totally unique, many are precious and fragile. Looking after them is not only a tremendous privilege but also a serious responsibility.
KALH is looking for a Customer Service Officer - Archives and Local History to join its small but highly motivated team. This role is a lynchpin of the Archives public services. The post holder leads the Archive Search Room and Document Production Team in fulfilling the needs of customers, ensuring the safety of the material during the time of its retrieval, its consultation in the search room, and its replacement in the strong room. The Customer Service Officer - Archives and Local History is tasked with seeing that the day-to-day business of the Search Room is delivered to the highest standards. Performance of the CSO - Archives and Local History role embraces many aspects of the wider KALH service, from managing staff responsible for service delivery, and liaising with other teams, to dealing with customers and their enquiries.
The successful person will be able to manage people effectively, have resilience for meeting day-to-day operational challenges, and enjoy employing interpersonal skills when working with colleagues and customers. They will demonstrate a genuine commitment to public service together with a proven interest in history.
The role offers a wide range of development opportunities, both within Libraries, Registration & Archives and wider parts of Kent County Council. A broad range of training courses are available to develop colleagues and help them progress in their skills and careers.
29.6 hours per week are worked across Monday to Friday and some Saturdays, at the Kent History and Library Centre. There may be occasional working at other locations across the county area.
