The team

**The Role**

The role of Chemicals Policy Senior Adviser is in the National Water, Coast and Pollution Team. The team is part of the Strategy and Government Advice directorate, which provides advice and support to stakeholders and government.

The predominant focus of the work will be on wider chemicals used outside agriculture. It seeks to:

- reduce the harmful effects of chemicals to wildlife
- enhance soil health, and water quality
- facilitate nature recovery and resilience by reducing exposure to chemicals

As part of the team, you’ll embed our chemicals strategy and agenda within Natural England’s work. You’ll be responsible for coordinating technical advice on:

- wider chemical impacts, environmental pathways and opportunities to reduce potential harm from chemicals which enter the natural environment
- how we respond to emerging strategy development and legislation reform

You’ll have an influencing role on internal operational delivery reforms and support.

You’ll input into cross-government policy making, playing a vital part in supporting the development of significant policy reforms such as for PFAS and endocrine disrupting chemicals.

You’ll take a leadership role with stakeholders relevant to your work area and input to stakeholder engagement planning.

To deliver this work, you’ll have support and guidance from Principal Advisers and Specialists within the team. You will have a functional leadership role for other lead advisers, and will work with colleagues from:

- NE’s Strategy and Government Advice
- National Operations and Area Team colleagues
- Specialists in the Chief Scientists Directorate

You should be enthusiastic and ambitious, able to see the bigger picture and work with others to create change. You’ll need excellent inter-personal, organisational and communication skills. You’ll need to show flexibility in taking on and managing other work should team priorities or resources change

Job description

Key Tasks/Responsibilities
- Working with others to develop and implement regulatory and legislative change to support reducing chemicals in the environment.
- Coordinate technical advice and guidance on the design and development of the new schemes or policy emerging from 25-year plan and Environment Act implementation.
- Support Natural England’s development and delivery of Natural England’s Chemicals Strategy providing leadership and advice as needed. Working with other colleagues in Natural England to provide advice and guidance on internal delivery and reforms including operational delivery.
- Secure cross organisational and programme development to help create longer-term changes and embedding wider policy reform and operational delivery such as within Nature Recovery Networks and Environment Act implementation.
- Develop and support the delivery of evidence projects to make sure Natural England’s advice is evidence led, working closely with other teams within Natural England to deliver projects on time and within budget.
- Maintain and develop relationships both internally and with key stakeholders such as Defra and HSE and to liaise with key internal networks.
- Support the capability building of this work area within Natural England through appropriate means such as guidance, training and mentoring to help build resilience.
