It is an exciting time to be working in BEIS as we develop new policies to help combat climate change and deliver Net Zero. The Social and Behavioural Energy Research team (SABER) is looking for a skilled and passionate analyst to join us to work on decarbonising buildings.

SABER delivers cutting-edge social research and behavioural science projects that support the delivery of a varied range of high-profile policies in BEIS, which will be key to meeting the net zero target and departmental ambitions for combating climate change while driving economic growth. We are part of a wider multi-disciplinary team of analysts where social researchers, operational researchers, statisticians and economists work hand in hand to make sure policies are based on sound evidence. Our team is a very friendly and supportive place, which places a high priority on individuals’ development.

This role offers the opportunity to lead on research to understand consumer views of low carbon options for heating and the triggers and barriers to adoption of these systems. It will also cover understanding industry perspectives and how installers are planning to engage with the net zero transition in making homes energy efficient and installing new technologies such as heat pumps. You will work closely with other researchers in SABER (in particular, behavioural science researchers) to scope, design, commission and deliver research which fills evidence gaps and informs the effective development and delivery of policy.

You will be use primary (e.g. quantitative surveys, experimental design, qualitative interviews, focus groups, deliberative approaches, case studies) and secondary research methods (e.g. rapid evidence assessments, analysis of existing data) techniques in a fast-paced environment.

**Person specification**:
The main areas of responsibility are expected to be:

- Developing and delivering a research programme into low carbon heat systems and decision-making and behaviours of homeowners, installers and businesses. Current projects include:

- Research to improve estimates of heating and cooling installers’ characteristics and activities, as well as understanding experiences and attitudes of installers to upskilling to install heat pumps.
- Evaluation to understand householder and installer experiences of heat pumps installation
- Developing and commissioning a high priority research project to better understand the supply chains for energy efficiency installations in homes.
- Confidently building and maintaining strong, collaborative relationships with policy and operational colleagues, analysts in BEIS and external stakeholders.
