**About SONI**
SONI is responsible for the safe, secure, economic and reliable operation of the transmission system in Northern Ireland under licence from the Utility Regulator and via a joint venture is responsible for operating the all-island Single Electricity Market (SEM).
As part of a licence change, the Utility Regulator (UR) outlined its vision for two independent TSO’s on the island of Ireland, where SONI works in the best interests of NI consumers and in all-island arrangements should work as an equal partner with EirGrid. It is also required that the SONI TSO business be managerially and operationally separate from its parent company. SONI is therefore undergoing organisational change as it implements the new licence requirement.
As Transmission System Operator, SONI has responsibility for planning upgrades to the electricity grid infrastructure to facilitate more renewable energy which is key to supporting the Northern Ireland Energy Strategy and the Climate Change (NI) Act 2022 which sets a legal target of 80% renewable energy usage by 2030. To respond successfully to this transformational change and the increased complexities of operating today, SONI’s strategic ambition supports said energy policy.
**Role Profile**
As part of the SONI leadership team, the Head of System Operations is a substantial leadership role and has overall responsibility for the daily system operations of Castlereagh House Control Centre (CHCC) and for the strategic planning of the NI system.
This is a key role within SONI, with a particular focus on ensuring the safe, secure, economic and reliable operation of the NI transmission system.
The role holder is responsible for managing daily operational decision making across all elements of SONI’s system operations and will ensure strategic alignment across the teams including business plan management and engagement/communication with a broad range of stakeholders in Northern Ireland and further afield including inter alia generators, government departments and elected representatives, transmission system operators, the transmission owner, external advisors and media.
The role holder will ensure that the key elements of the SONI strategy are delivered in the short to medium term and that the necessary changes are implemented to ensure the renewables targets are met. The role holder will also play a key role in shaping the long-term requirements of system operations to deliver a safe secure sustainable transmission network. This will include representing SONI on the implementation of all island projects impacting on system operations as well as areas relevant to system operations where SONI works in conjunction with EirGrid.
Acting as the first point of escalation for systems related matters, they will provide technical leadership, counsel and support and seek to resolve operational issues in a timely manner. The role holder will lead the Control Room team, coach, facilitate, empower and support SONI staff in solving problems.
As a senior leader within SONI the role holder will engage widely both internally and externally with senior stakeholders including EirGrid, other TSO’s, government, and regulators.
**Key Duties & Responsibilities**
- Manage Northern Ireland System Operations in a safe, secure, reliable and economic manner to deliver a dispatch that minimises the cost of operating the system and benefits customers in Northern Ireland.
- End to end responsibility for day to day System Operations (covering both the control room and the back office teams) in SONI acting as a first point of escalation for system operational issues.
- Oversee the review and monitoring of plant margins, system demand forecast, renewable forecasts and generation to ensure security standards are maintained at all times.
- Develop and oversee procedures and quality assurance to allow continuous risk analysis relating to system operations; ensuring that all policies are followed and prudent operation of the system within the Operating Security Standards.
- Lead Transmission and Generation outage planning.
- Lead the introduction of change in the NI Control room, including the introduction of new technologies, tools, processes and practices, bring staff on the change journey.
- Manage a high performing team of professional experienced engineers, including resource planning, individual performance management and talent development.
- Ensure safety requirements are met as per NIE Networks Safety Rules and participate in incident investigations as required.
- Liaise with third party providers and develop pro-active working relationships with EirGrid, Power Stations, Renewable Generators, System Service Providers, DSOs, Interconnectors
