An exciting opportunity has arisen for a (Trainee/Apprentice) Associate Practitioner Mammographer to join the Breast Imaging Team at Northampton General Hospital.

This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic, motivated and patient centred individual to join our friendly and welcoming specialist team

The Breast Screening Unit has advanced up to date imaging technology to support the work undertaken and have this year replaced our two mobile breast screening units.

Supporting Clinical Excellence

Perform routine mammographic examinations under direct and indirect supervision in the Northampton Breast Screening Programme, to nationally recognized standards, within the mobile and static units.

Once qualified, to work remotely alongside another Assistant/Associate Practitioner on a mobile screening unit, indirectly supervised by a radiographer in the Forrest Centre.

To know when to refer clients/patients who present technical challenges, have breast implants and/or a pacemaker or other implanted devices, to a senior radiographer.

To assist radiologists and radiographers with specialised procedures. To prepare instrument trollies in readiness for clean ultrasound and stereotactic procedures.

To check and document, client/patient identity demographics in line with local and IRMER guidance.

To note any reported breast problems and observe and note any significant clinical signs and symptoms, and refer to a senior radiographer when necessary.

To ensure that a senior radiographer checks the images of clients/patients who require a repeat examination.

To identify screening images available and prepare them accordingly for image interpretation.

To greet clients/patients/visitors with respect and with a manner which promotes their sense of dignity at all times, taking into account any cultural and language barriers.

To be aware of the needs of the individual person and be able to communicate effectively with clients/patients who come from different backgrounds, or who may have challenging behaviour, learning or physical disabilities.

To ensure clients/patients receive a comprehensive explanation about the mammogram and the expected time for receiving their results.

To perform accurate standard mammography examinations in a sensitive and professional manner, in the time constraints agreed locally.

To respond to any questions and/or concerns from clients/patients/visitors professionally, knowledgably and with confidence and to know when and how to refer onto senior colleagues and other departments.

To encourage and promote service users to provide feedback following their appointment.

To provide support for clients/patients undergoing invasive procedures.

People/Management Excellence

To communicate effectively with all members of the multi-disciplinary team and other departments as required.

To support, guide and train, new Associate Practitioners and Radiology Departmental Assistants (RDAs), work experience people and other visitors to the department.

Professional/General Responsibilities

To be responsible for the safe use of equipment and adhere to trust policies, IRMER regulations and local rules of practice.

To take part in regular imaging analysis and mammography audit sessions. To maintain a technical rate of < 3%.
