Locum Consultant in Paediatric Histopathology

Oxford, United Kingdom Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Full time

This replacement locum post will work with a consultant colleague to provide a paediatric pathology service within the Oxford University Hospitals, performing or supervising cut ups, autopsies, microscopy, or other diagnostic techniques, reporting cases, and supporting clinical meetings and case discussions.

OUH Trust in partnership with Oxford University aims to be at the forefront of modern diagnostic techniques. A willingness to adopt new diagnostic techniques into Cellular Pathology and undertake training where necessary is essential. Paediatric pathologists with expertise in paediatric neuropathology, or interested in developing such an interest, would be welcome to apply, though this is not a requirement of the post.

The Trust comprises four hospitals - the John Radcliffe Hospital, Churchill Hospital and Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Headington and the Horton General Hospital in Banbury.

Our values, standards and behaviours define the quality of clinical care we offer and the professional relationships we make with our patients, colleagues and the wider community. We call this Delivering Compassionate Excellence and its focus is on our values of compassion, respect, learning, delivery, improvement and excellence. These values put patients at the heart of what we do and underpin the quality healthcare we would like for ourselves or a member of our family. Watch how we set out to deliver compassionate excellence via the OUH YouTube channel.

Oxford University Hospitals is the hub of the South 4 Pathology Partnership. Cellular Pathology across the South 4 Pathology Partnership works in collaboration. Support of colleagues and services in the partner trusts will be an increasing component of the post as digital pathology and an integrated laboratory information management system facilitate closer working across the sites. As a consultant in a specialist centre, the appointee will be expected to develop sufficient expertise to support complex referral cases, and to work closely with colleagues assure the quality of the work of the whole team. Paediatric pathology will also work with the wider specialist network to share specialist expertise and assure resilience.

Teaching/Research

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust is a teaching hospital trust, and the post-holder will be required to participate in programmes for teaching clinical students, training junior doctors and in clinical examinations. It is expected that this will be an integral part of everyday clinical activity.

The post-holder’s contribution to teaching, training and research will be included in the regular job plan review.

Clinical Governance

The post-holder will participate in all clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust, and external accrediting bodies.

Personal and Professional Development

The post-holder will be required to keep themselves fully up to date with their relevant area of practice and to be able to demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the Trust. Professional or study leave will be granted at the discretion of the Trust, in line with the prevailing Terms and Conditions of Service, to support appropriate study, postgraduate training activities, relevant CME courses and other appropriate personal development needs.

Management

The post-holder will be required to work within the Trust's management policies and procedures, both statutory and internal, accepting that the resources available to the Trust are finite and that all
changes in clinical practice or workload, or developments requiring additional resources must have prior agreement with the Trust. The post-holder will undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of their patients, and the running of their clinical service under the direction of the lead clinician and/or directorate chair.
