Funding is permanent and there will be the potential for later conversion to a substantive post following appropriate interview and CSAC appointment process. This post is being offered as locum initially as there is an urgent need to appoint as soon as possible due to the increased clinical workload from the above expansion.

The Paediatric Critical Care Unit (PCCU) is a busy 18 bedded unit serving both the local population and 5 district-general hospitals in the Thames Valley (TV) Area as well as supporting district hospitals across Wessex in conjunction with the Southampton Oxford Retreival Service (SORT). We support a variety of specialist services including paediatric neurosurgery, craniofacial surgery, ENT, cardiology, respiratory and haematolgoy/oncology in conjunction with the specialist teams.

We are a Major Trauma Centre (MTC) and the hub for the Thames Valley major trauma network, responsible for the care of over 1000 adult and child major trauma cases per year. We have a vibrant clinical research portfolio contributing to a variety of national and international clinical trials. We jointly run and staff a 24 hour paediatric critical care transport and retrieval service in conjunction with University Hospitals Southampton (SORT).

The successful applicant will join a team of 8 substantive Consultants. The post-holder’s commitments will include the day to day management of children on the paediatric critical care unit, staffing the retrieval service and mentoring and teaching junior and nursing staff. The successful applicant should also be able to demonstrate experience with and a commitment to clinical governance and patient safety issues. Appropriate administrative support will be provided to support this post.Principal Activities

The post holder's duties will to provide tertiary specialist intensive care to children presenting to the John Radcliffe Hospital and other hospitals primarily in the Thames Valley and Wessex paediatric critical care retrieval network.
Clinical

The Paediatric Critical Care Unit in Oxford admits around 850-900 children per year. The Unit provides high dependency (Level 2) and intensive (Level 3) care to children in the Thames Valley and Wessex region.

Medical specialties supported by the unit include tertiary level respiratory, cardiology, infectious disease and immunology, haematology and oncology and gastroenterology. We are a major trauma centre and provide emergency and elective paediatric neurosurgery. We have nationally recognised cleft lip and palate, ENT, plastic surgery and craniofacial services all of whom are dependant on Oxford PCCU for post operative care.
