**What is the purpose of this job?**

The post holder is accountable for leading the New Technology Introduction team. The role is to support and influence the national roll out of Digital Railway Technologies. The role leads industry in realising the expected benefits of digital signalling and control systems, including; ETCS, Traffic Management (TM) Crew and Stock Systems, Connected Driver Advisory Systems (C-DAS) and GSM-R and system interfaces. The role has responsibility for;
- ERTMS Fleet Engineer
- ERTMS Driver Training Manager

**What can I expect to do in this job?**

This isn’t an exhaustive list, but things you can expect to be involved with include:
**Key Responsibilities**:

- To represent the TOCs in and for the national programmes in respect of Digital Railway, and GSM-R guided by and taking strategic direction from NR and RDG Governance. This requires active participation in workstreams, delivery of agreed remitted activity, active participation at programme level and related meetings.
- Issues that affect TOC businesses, and other industry partners, are notified to members and recorded to ensure that they are actioned as appropriate.
- Provide formal communication via the appropriate RDG groups including the Digital Railway Steering Group, RDG briefs, education and specialist sessions.
- To provide support to the National Joint Rosco Project, First-in Class and other fleet fitment projects for both retrofit and new build.
- To support and lead remitted activity undertaken in respect of national GSM-R and ERTMS deployment programmes so that they are carried out to the specification, timescales and cost agreed.
- Lead discussion and obtain funding and remit for the New Technology Introduction team from the Network Rail and alternative sources for specific activity and then managing within budget.
- Responsible for day to day leadership of team members including, but not limited to, carrying out annual reviews, priority setting and review, sign off of expenses, agreement of leave, development.
- Responsible for arranging representation at European Fora for Operations and Command Control Communication and Signalling Technical Specifications for Interoperability and NTSN Mirror Groups.
- Support briefing sessions with ERTMS working Groups (inc Union Engagement).

**Who will my key contacts be?**
- Working primarily Industry Partnership for Digital Railway, NR, Department for Transport, System Authority, Technical Authority, TOCs, FOCs, related groups.
- RDG colleagues as required.
- Individual TOCs
- RoSCos in the National Joint Rosco Project.
- Heads of Department and Director levels at RSSB
- To foster contacts with European Railways and Organisations including CER and EUG for the purpose of influencing and exchanging information.
- Links to ORR to allow an exchanging information and influencing for the approvals process and other issues as appropriate.
- Links also required with DfT Digital Team for influencing and exchanging information.

**What experience, skills and knowledge do I need?**
- A degree or equivalent professional qualification
- Member of the IRO or a professional Engineering Institution
- Team/people leadership skills
- A broad knowledge of railway operations, train engineering, infrastructure management, commercial processes and procedures with substantive relevant experience in positions of responsibility leading teams and projects
- Systems Engineering
- Able to write and contribute to concise, structured technical reports and documents.
- Software engineering understanding of the principles
- Understanding of the commercial framework and arrangements in respect of the rail industry
- Understand the framework of legislation and standard in respect of rolling stock and Command, Control and Signalling and Operations
- The management of financial budgets
- Communications skills to be able to influence and work within the industry at various levels
