Receive incoming telephone calls, answering general enquiries and transfer or document calls and messages as appropriate Assist and signpost patients to the most appropriate service or healthcare professional in a courteous, efficient, and effective way. Book appointments and telephone consultations for patients. Undertake a variety of administrative duties to assist in the smooth running of the Practice including the provision of clerical support to clinical staff and other members of the Practice team. Facilitate effective communication between patients, members of the primary healthcare team, secondary care and other associated healthcare agencies.

Organise requests for ambulances, patient transport for outpatient visits. Be adaptable and able to prioritise tasks whilst working as part of a team in a busy, pressured environment. To be flexible and provide cover for colleagues on annual leave or sickness including early and late shifts. Liaise and communicate with community nursing team and other health care professionals.

Registration of new patients according to the practice catchment area onto the system. Amend patient records to show change of contact details onto the clinical system. Ensure the reception area is adequately stocked with stationary, specimen bottles, forms and flag to appropriate person when running low. Attend regular practice and reception meetings to discuss the running of the surgery and services provided as well as any other meetings as required.

To attend appropriate training as arranged. To undertake any other duties that may be reasonably required by the Practice. After additional training to work as PA to Duty GP on a rota basis liaising with the on-call doctors to organise visit allocation and ensure clinics run smoothly, contact patients who need follow up appointments and organise transport/urgent ambulances when required. After additional training to work as Nurse Receptionist on a rota basis liaising with the nursing team, GPs and district nurses, processing and checking all samples are correct and ready for the courier each morning and preparing appropriate documentation.
