We are looking for an assistant with excellent communication skills, the ability to work both independently, as part of a team and alongside other professionals as part of a wider multi-disciplinary team.

We are passionate about developing our staff, you will have access to peer support and supervision from the Senior Therapists across the team. You will be supported to attend courses and training in line with the RCSLT Competency frameworks for eating and drinking, to an assistant Practitioner level.

If you do not already have the AP qualification, Foundation degree or equivalent, you will need an NVQ Level 3 in health care along with both Maths and English qualification at level 2 (GCSE equivalent grade C or above) in order to be considered for the Band 4 Apprenticeship Training programme.

Support Speech and Language Therapists in their assessment, treatment, and review of acutely ill patients with swallowing and communication difficulties, including assisting with Videofluoroscopy clinic and Fibreoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing assessment.

Independently manage a patient caseload providing 1:1 therapy.

Complete communication and/or dysphagia therapy with patients.

Provide training to patients, carers and other professionals regarding swallowing and communication difficulties.

Liaise with patients’ family and carers to gather pre-admission baselines and further information regarding patients’ communication and swallowing.

Hand over vital Speech Therapy recommendations to carers and professionals in other areas of the Trust.

Independently perform direct tolerance checks of patients eating and drinking

Supporting audit work and service improvement.

We provide regular supervision, appraisals, and team meetings. Continued Professional Development (CPD) is key, and we provide regular supervision, appraisals, training, and team meetings. AHP Assistant Practitioners are supported by the Trust to participate in Apprenticeship schemes as required.

The role of Assistant Practitioner will involve the following key tasks:
Assessment and triage of patients.

Patient and staff education and training.

Joint assessments under supervision of qualified SLT and Dietitians.

Identification of risk and quality issues within the service and highlighting these to supervisors and discussing at safety meetings.

Innovative working across professions and the wider Therapy team.

Additional training on swallow assessments under supervision from a Speech and Language Therapist.
