Overview:
Building Standards Division is looking for a Construction Professional with practical experience of the building standards system.

If you want to develop changes that will strengthen the building standards system, so that Scotland’s buildings are safe, sustainable and energy efficient, and have experience interpreting building regulations and the legislation underpinning the system then this job is for you.

This is a rare opportunity to join the Building Standards Division and support high profile work involving regular contact with local government and construction industry stakeholders.

The division is responsible for developing and maintaining the policies and legislation for the building standards system in Scotland ensuring it remains fit for purpose. Current priorities include strengthening the system following the recommendations from the Grenfell Tower Inquiry, and the development of legislative changes arising from projects led by the Building Standards Futures Board.

Applications are invited from professionals working in a built environment role, with a practical knowledge of building standards, who wish to contribute to work on strengthening delivery of the building standards system. You will work in a supportive team at an exciting time and will have the opportunity to develop legislation, and practical guidance, that supports effective use of the system.

This is a rewarding post that provides opportunities to lead projects that ensure the system continues to evolve for the future. You will be able to use your technical knowledge and experience of the system when developing options for change and when leading on regular liaison with building standards professionals in local government. You will use effective communication skills when preparing papers for meetings and correspondence on behalf of Scottish Ministers.

This role requires frequent collaboration with relevant policy leads in Scottish Government, with UK Government colleagues and with building standards professionals across local government on all aspects of building standards

**LOCATION**

This vacancy is based in Denholm House, Livingston however currently working on a Hybrid basis.

**Responsibilities**:

- Develop practical proposals for change - new and revised guidance, and supporting legislative change.
- Respond to correspondence from the public and construction professionals about the building standards system, and providing advice where required.
- Develop research specifications to assist with making recommendations for change.
- Provide an effective point of contact between the division and Local Authority Building Standards Scotland for joint working on shared goals for the verification service.
- Prepare briefing on building standards related matters for Ministers and other parts of Scottish Government.

Essential Criteria & Qualifications:
A professional qualification related to building standards or construction is required. Other qualifications equivalent to these may also be acceptable, if you are in any doubt please contact to discuss.

- Good analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex and/or technical information accurately and present it in a concise, consistent and engaging way
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Good interpersonal skills with experience of working collaboratively with colleagues and stakeholders.

**MINIMUM TIME IN POST**

You will be expected to remain in post for a minimum of three years unless successful at gaining promotion to a higher Band or Grade.
