The Cardiothoracic theatre unit has current vacancies for high performing and motivated registered Operating Department practitioners to join our dynamic, innovative and rapidly expanding multi-professional team. Our team is empowered to maintain the delivery of quality patient focused, safe and compassionate care by our collaborative multi-professional team working in conjunction with providing advice and training solutions which meet organisational, professional, and individual development needs.

Safe and effective working in Cardiothoracic Theatres requires a high level of specialist knowledge and skills therefore we offer a comprehensive package of competency based education to help you effectively develop your knowledge and skills.

This approach is actively led by the educators within cardiothoracic theatres & recovery senior nurse management team. Our team are also highly skilled and proactive in facilitating your learning, enabling you to deliver all aspects of safe and informed clinical care and practice within our unit.

Ensure that the highest possible patient focused quality care is delivered within the Cardiothoracic Theatre.

To deliver a high standard of clinical care to a diverse range of patients and support to carers within the clinical environment as part of the multi-disciplinary team.

To act as supervisor to junior members of staff and students.

We are a leading cardiothoracic unit operating 4 stand-alone theatres providing 24 hour cover for both elective and emergency procedures. We provide top quality, modern facilities for the management of heart and lung disease, enabling our multidisciplinary teams to work together to provide a high standard of care for patients across South Yorkshire and the Humber region.

We provide a comprehensive range of services for the management of all aspects of:

- Adult Coronary Heart Disease
- Heart valve disorders
- Diseases of the heart muscle
- Heart failure
- Cardiac arrhythmias
- Inherited heart disease
- Adult congenital heart disease
- Surgical treatment of lung disease including lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and chest wall conditions.

- Coronary Artery bypass grafts (CABG)
- Cardiac valve replacements and repairs
- Thoracotomies
- Lobectomies
- Mediastinoscopies

Promote high quality care, ensuring individual patients needs are assessed, care planned, implemented and evaluated regularly. Care will be patient centred and patients will be encouraged to participate in the planning of their care using evidence based research practices.

Exercise judgement in assessing wide ranging and complex patient problems. Agree solutions, ensure and promote options to enable the delivery of optimum patient care.

Act sensitively, confidentially and with empathy in demonstrating understanding of wide ranging physical and emotional needs. Take the lead in managing contentious, sensitive and delicate issues with patients, their relatives and staff.

Responsible for maintaining contemporaneous, timely and accurate records and reporting patient progress to medical staff and the multi-disciplinary team, both written and electronic

Take an active role within clinical audit and service evaluation for the Cardiothoracic Theatre Recovery

Continue to recognise the rights, dignity and confidentiality of patients, staff and relatives

Act as a role model and teacher, providing mentorship and support and demonstrate exemplary practice to all members of the MDT.

Achieve and maintain the identified specialist competencies ensuring that your clinical knowledge is up to date and that a high standard of patient care is achieved.

Contribute to the maintenance of an effective monitoring system of Healthcare Governance; supporting compliance with risk assessment, policies and procedures, Health and Safety legislation including the use and decontamination of clinical equipment, information governance, and quality assurance measures

Ensure all staff receive instruction on their personal responsibilities towards minimising risk within the Directorate and be aware of legal implications of their actions/omissions

Develop/innovate/promote all quality initiatives, including the monitoring of standards, auditing of those standards, implementation of Clinical Assurance Toolkit

Protect, improve and preserve patients’ health related to the perioperative pathway by adherence to infection control policies and best practice at all times and monitoring of compliance; responsible for implementing the Infection Control Strategy

Monitor the requisitioning of all drugs, their safe storage and accurate administration according to HCPC and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trusts policy and procedures.
