The East & East Midlands Area stretches from Essex to the Peak District and contains over 250,000 hectares of woodland, 86% of which is owned and managed outside of the Forestry Commission’s estate. We are full of contrasts: have the two least-wooded counties in the UK; some areas are under sea level but others over 600m; we have internationally important ancient woodlands and very productive commercial plantations; we have number of important community initiatives and valuable peri-urban woodlands.

The Area Team operates from three offices distributed over the 12 counties we cover, but most staff work from home. The Area Team is led by Steve Scott (Area Director) and currently operates with 51 staff and expanding to 67; the team continues to expand to begin meeting the Government’s ambitions to create 30,000ha a year of new woodland in the UK by 2025.

**Job description**:
We are seeking dynamic individuals with experience in forestry and/or land management, who are quick to learn and can inspire and enthuse others. The Woodland Officer Tree Health represents Forest Services front-line woodlands and forestry expertise in plant health related matters. You will and able to provide advice and support to the private forestry sector in addition to Local Authorities and Defra colleagues. Internal team working is also integral in the Woodland Officer Tree Health role, for example across the Area Team and the wider Forestry Commission (FC) (e.g. opportunity for review of national guidance and procedures). You will have the ability to assist the Forestry Commission to build strong working relationships to help create and manage diverse, resilient multi-purpose woodlands, identify a range of pest and disease and work within the FC’s plant health regulations and procedures.

**Responsibilities**
- Protect our existing trees and woodlands.- Improve the condition and resilience of our existing woodlands and wider treescape:

- Support woodland owners and managers in responding to key challenges of pests and diseases including Chalara ash dieback and Phytophthora ramorum.
- Management of Statutory Plant Health Notices (SPHN’s), providing advice to a range of stakeholders and colleagues, monitoring and site visits.
- Work to increase resilience within woodlands to the challenges of a changing climate; and - facilitate closer working across the forestry sector.

Administer Forestry Regulations to include:
- Forestry Act - Felling Licences to ensure tree felling is carried out legally in accordance with the principles of the UK Forestry Standard as appropriate;
- Environmental Impact Assessments - afforestation, deforestation, forest roads and forest quarries, and iii. Habitats Regulations - re forest operations within Special Protection Areas and Special Areas of Conservation;
