Job Advert

Data Steward

Location: Kings Cross, London (with flexible working options available)

Salary : Band 6

Contract Type: Fixed term until 30 June 2025 / Permanent

Hours: 35 hours per week

**Closing Date**: 23/02/2024

**Introduction**:
The Open Data Institute is seeking to appoint a data steward to provide specialist input to our projects and programmes.

**About the ODI**:
The Open Data Institute (ODI) was co-founded by two visionary leaders: Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the world wide web, and Sir Nigel Shadbolt, renowned AI professor. Our mission is to work with companies and governments to build an open, trustworthy data ecosystem, where people can make better decisions using data and manage any harmful impacts.

The ODI delivers advisory, training, research and development services, encompassing public policy, business strategy and technology. Our programme of work is busy and constantly changing. We are committed to producing work at a very high standard and delivering measurable value to our partners and clients.

**About OpenActive**:
The goal of OpenActive is to tackle inactivity in England by making it as easy to book a badminton court online as it is to book a hotel room. This exciting programme brings together a growing community of activity providers, technology suppliers and data users. By setting common data standards, and helping organisations to openly publish their timetables and opportunities as open data, we are making it easier for people to get physically active.

To foster change in the physical activity sector, OpenActive needs to ensure that participating organisations are adopting the standards and using them as effectively as possible. Equally, we need to make sure that the standards serve the community's needs and help all stakeholders to realise value from them.

**About the role**:
Data stewards manage data assets to ensure that they deliver value to organisations, they ensure data is properly documented, that an appropriate level of quality is maintained and that data is properly governed. The ODI recognises that robust data stewardship is critical to the successful delivery of data infrastructures such as OpenActive. Working as part of ODI’s data tech discipline, and in close collaboration with the wider organisation and clients, you will bring your data stewardship expertise to bear on OpenActive and the ODI’s wider portfolio of projects. In this role you would expect to be engaged in a wide range of projects; for example you might be helping clients improve data quality, supporting the development and maintenance of open standards for data or building data governance frameworks.

**Responsibilities**:
In this role you will use your data management and stewardship expertise to help our project teams and clients to:

- Catalogue and document data assets, business terminology and metadata.
- Define requirements and develop open data standards to address these requirements.
- Identify data quality issues and collaborate with data providers to resolve them.
- Ensure that data management and governance processes are defined and implemented to build trust in data and trustworthy organisational data practices.

Specifically for OpenActive you will work with the ODI team and engage the OpenActive stakeholder community to:

- Maintain the initiative's schemas and core reference data.
- Ensure that OpenActive’s data specifications are maintained and developed to reflect user needs:

- Providing specialist leadership to OpenActive's Standards Committee.
- Leading work to enable OpenActive data to interoperate with other data and standards.
- Contributing to the development and improvement of technical documentation and user guidance.
- Deliver measurable improvements in the quality of OpenActive data:

- Engage data publishers to maximise the number of feeds that comply with the latest specifications.
- Collaborate with data publishers to improve the quality of data within feeds to address use cases prioritised by the initiative.
- Identify and mitigate data management risks and issues.

**Skills**:

- A strong knowledge and understanding of data management and governance including practical experience of:

- Developing organisational data practices, including data standardisation and ethics.
- Data design including the development and maintenance of data standards/specifications.
- Data quality management.
- Metadata and reference data management.
- Data storage management and data operations.
- Excellent influencing and communication skills:

- Demonstrable ability to engage, motivate and influence both business and technical stakeholders.
- Strong end-user focus.
- An ability to think strategically.
- Fluent written and spoken English.
- Technical writing experience.
- Comfortable with presenting.
- Experience of using collaboration tools such as Slack, Google Workspace and Medium to build communities.
- Experience of remote working techniques.
