We are looking for flexible, enthusiastic and committed traineeNewborn Hearing Screeners. 1 Part-time position 30 hrs - 4 days per week across Mon-Sun, this is a position based at St Thomas’s Hospital but the role also requires you to provide cover across 5 Hospitals and 6 clinics in South East London as and when required. Our screener posts are based in five maternity units in South East LondonLambeth, Southwark, Lewisham, Bromley, Bexley and Greenwich Hospitals.In response to a national initiative to screen all newborn babies hearing,we are seeking to recruit an organised, methodical, caring and empathetic person to join our existing screening team. You will have responsibility for screening newborn babies in a family-friendly way, following the national NHSP screening protocols, for which the specialist training will be provided. You will be required to perform the screen, record and collect data, and liaise with parents and health professionals. Experience of handling newborn babies is essential. Previous experience of working in a hospital environment would be an advantage. You should have excellent communication and interpersonal skills as well as some computer skills. This is a 7-day service so weekend and Bank Holiday working will be required on a rota basis. The NHSP aims to screen the hearing of all newborn babies to enable the identification of children with permanent hearing impairment as early as possible.

To work as a member of the NHSP team, as the health professional performing newborn hearing screens, recording and collecting data both manually and electronically and liaising with parents, health professionals, others stakeholders and the NHSP Programme lead and/or Assistant Programme lead as appropriate. This post will involve direct handling of newborn babies and contact with parents. Though the base is at St Thomas's Hospital the role also requires you to provide cover across the 5 Hospitals and 6 Clinics in South East London as and when required.

As a trainee you will be working towards passing the External Competency Assessment to become an independent screener and completing the level 3 Diploma for Health screeners which is a recognised national qualification.

The SEL NHSP team is part of Paediatric Audiology Service in the community arm of Guy’s and St Thomas’ Foundation Trust.

You will work as a part of the South East London Newborn Hearing Screening Programme. We are the biggest Newborn Hearing Screening Programme in England. You will be part of a Team that provides an excellent screening service across 5 Hospitals and 6 Clinic across South East London.We are a dedicated team that screening babies to identify the babies that will require further diagnostic testing in Paediatric Audiology.

Covering the South-East London boroughs, this is one of the largest NHSP sites in the country, with approximately 26,000 births annually. It is an outstanding opportunity to work within a team which is part of a highly successful major national screening programme.
- Carry out the hearing screening of newborn babies within the maternity unit and outpatient clinics following national and local protocols
- Ability to use automated equipment without direct supervision whilst referring to Local Co-ordinators for cases that do not fall within protocol
- On a day to day basis organise workload to ensure maximum number of inpatient babies receive a hearing screen by working flexibly where necessary
- Identify and prioritise those babies requiring a screen on the Post-natal ward, Neonatal intensive care units and Labour ward
- Communicate effectively with parents regarding the screening process, liaising with interpreting services where necessary
- To answer any concerns parents may have prior to the screen being undertaken and communicate results in a sensitive and timely manner
- Effective and professional communication with other screeners and members of the team and other colleagues on the maternity unit and in the community
- Appropriate multi-disciplinary liaison regarding appropriateness and timing of the hearing screen
- Ensure appropriate Patient referrals are made to the Audiology and outpatient service via the NHSP administration team.
- Maintain confidentiality of the babies and their families at all times
- Promote a professional, welcoming and caring environment endorsing a Family Friendly approach to care
- Assess and maintain stock availability in clinical areas: patient literature, screening consumables and equipment
- To report all untoward incidents to both the Local Co-ordinator and the midwife in charge of the post-natal unit
- Be aware of Child Protection issues and Trust policy and report any concerns to Local Co-ordinator
- Adhere to infection control policies for self, babies and equipment
- Ensure the safety and security of equipment at all times and to report any equipment faults to the Local Co-ordinator at the earliest op
