Harwell, United Kingdom Diamond Light Source Full time

**Post Doctoral Research Associate - X-ray Spectroscopy**

**Harwell Science and Innovation Campus, Oxfordshire**

**Salary £33,963 to £39,955 per annum (Discretionary range to £45,949)**

**Full time / Flexible hours considered.**

**3 years Fixed Term**

**Reference: 11041**

**About Us**

Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron science facility. By accelerating electrons to near light-speed, Diamond generates brilliant beams of light from infra-red to X-rays which are used for academic and industry research and development across a range of scientific disciplines including structural biology, physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, earth, and environmental sciences.

**About the Role**

We now have an opportunity for a Post-Doctoral Research Associate to study metal hyperaccumulation in plants using synchrotron X-ray techniques.

Metal hyperaccumulation, defined as the uptake and storage of exceptionally high concentrations of a metal in the aerial tissues of a plant, is an unusual trait that has been observed in around 700 plant species. X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) Imaging have been important techniques for studying the biology of metal hyperaccumulating plants, as they can be used to study the distribution and speciation of metal in plant leaves. One of the best supported hypotheses for the evolution of metal hyperaccumulation in plants is that the accumulated metal provides protection against pests and pathogens, a hypothesis sometimes known as the elemental defence hypothesis.

Further responsibilities will include:

- Managing the day-to-day running of a research project.
- Identifying research objectives and carry out appropriate research activities within a given timescale.
- Attending internal scientific and administrative meetings with scientific collaborators.
- Leading in the analysis and authoring of scientific results in international peer-reviewed journals.

You will also be required to devote a small fraction of your time to support the associated instrument(s) aligned to this post, fulfilling duties such as acting as local contact for relevant and collaborative user experiments, taking part in instrument development projects, and discussing experiment and data analysis with outside users in scientific areas directly related to your research project.

**About You**

**You will hold an appropriate Science Degree and PhD along with proven relevant experience.**
- laboratory work.
- Experiments done at synchrotron facilities.
- Hardware design and development.

Also, a detailed knowledge of at least one relevant technique and broad knowledge of the others (i.e., imaging, spectroscopy, computed tomography).

**Benefits**

Diamond offers an exceptional benefits package to support staff in achieving a positive work/life balance. This includes 25 days annual leave plus 13 days of statutory and company holidays and 2 annual volunteering days, along with flexible working hours and an excellent pension scheme.
