**The Role**

This post has a central role in delivering on our targets as laid out in Backstage Academy’s access and participation plan and will have a key role within the Student Experience department. They will be responsible for developing and delivering an effective & targeted programme that encourages and supports a diverse range of applicants, particularly those from underrepresented and disadvantaged backgrounds locally and nationally.

The Access, Participation and Progression Officer will make a significant contribution to the on-going monitoring and evaluation of all aspects of student recruitment and student progress once enrolled. Maintaining a supportive role for students once recruited. We also anticipate this role will play some part in Open Days, recruitment events and School & College visits. The role will work closely with student representatives and the academic, marketing, student support and admissions teams.

**PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**:
**Networks, Research & Resources**
- Engaging in external networks relevant to Evidence and Evaluation in Widening Participation as appropriate, sharing good practice and participating in relevant research projects.
- Developing resources which support research informed practice and evaluation for our Access & Participation Plan (APP). This will include producing guidance documents and training to staff to ensure consistency and effective practice in our APP evaluation and being responsible for setting up and managing a bank of resources regarding ‘what works’ for widening participation student groups. These resources will inform decision making in our APP work across the institution.

**Outreach**
- To assist with the provision of advice and guidance on Open days and recruitment events, providing information to applicants about what support is available.
- Contribute to the institution’s induction and enrolment activities through planning and co-ordinating events or strategies to help new students transition into Higher Education.

Ensure that all Backstage Academy’s outreach activities are fully evaluated, and that the data produced from evaluation is available to feed into the Institution’s Widening Participation strategies/planning

**Evidence & Evaluation**
- Establishing and managing the monitoring of APP initiatives and their subsequent evaluations taking place across the Institution. Being responsible for ensuring that records of Institution wide initiatives, their planning documentation, evaluation approaches and evaluation reports are conducted as required and centrally collated.
- Taking a ‘Theory of Change’ approach, being responsible for leading the co-ordination of effective planning for our APP initiatives and their subsequent evaluations within departments and teams across the Institution. This will involve supporting staff to ensure the required processes are adopted to meet standards set by the Office for Students.
- Leading on APP initiative ‘wrap up workshops’ to investigate the impact and implications of APP initiatives across the Institution, to ensure the lessons learnt contribute to a continuous cycle of improvement.
- Using internal data sets to recognise and interpret trends or patterns in data to assist colleagues across the Institution in identifying areas where action is required against our APP targets.
- Provide advice and guidance to colleagues regarding both qualitative and quantitative evaluation methodologies, and their subsequent data analysis to enable them to implement robust and proportionate process and impact evaluation methodologies for APP initiatives.
- Independently designing and conducting appropriate qualitative and quantitative evaluation projects and interpreting the results. For example, leading on the annual evaluation of APP financial support to students, as required by the Office for Students, to inform senior decision makers.
- To write evaluative reports on patterns and trends for senior decision makers, to inform the strategic direction of our work.

**Regulation and compliance**
- To understand data protection and ethics regarding evaluation and to be able to advise colleagues accordingly.
