This is an exciting time for the Children's Emergency Department. You will have the opportunity to help shape the future direction of the department and take part in hospital wide initiatives to improve Emergency Care and the patient experience across the whole of the acute pathway.

We are keen to hear from individuals who have experience at working at a senior nurse level within a children's emergency care environment and are keen to embrace change and provide visible nursing inspiration.

You will provide leadership and direction to our dedicated Children's Emergency Department team and more widely will input your specialist knowledge and expertise to the emergency departments within our three other hospital sites.

As Matron you will have responsibility for the delivery of high quality, responsive, safe and effective care that improves patient outcomes and patient experience. Proven skills and a working knowledge of leading, and an ability to demonstrate excellent communications skills are required.

The post holder will support the Head of Nursing and Clinical Director to ensure that high quality patient focused care is delivered within the Children’s Emergency Department (CED).

The post holder will lead and manage the CED Manager, Senior Sister/Charge nurse team, the PENP team and the ACORNS (Acute Children’s Outreach Nursing Service) lead nurse to ensure that high quality patient focused care is delivered within the Children’s Emergency Department (CED).

The post holder will actively participate in the clinical and operational management of the department; working collaboratively with the Nurse Consultant (emergency paediatrics) to ensure on-going service development and the delivery of exemplary care to children, young people and their families.

The post holder will act as a highly visible, clinical leader and role model whilst ensuring the provision of quality patient care, sharing expertise with colleagues.

The post holder will lead the governance assurance framework for Children’s Emergency and Ambulatory Care.

The post holder will promote learning, professional curiosity and to hold others to account.

The post holder will guide the activity of nursing, medical and other staff to ensure rapid assessment, treatment and ultimately transfer/discharge of children and young people.

The post holder will lead the educational and training programmes for the children’s emergency and ambulatory care team

The Children's Emergency Department at the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital in Brighton provides dedicated 24 hour emergency services to Children and Young People aged 0 - 16 years old. The department is supported by a team of Specialist Children's ED nurses, ED consultants, ED medical team, Paediatric ED Consultant and the Paediatric team.

The department cares for Children with a wide variety of illness and injuries and often these children are acutely unwell and require high levels of care.

Main

**Responsibilities**:
Clinical Practice
- The post holder will have specialist paediatric knowledge of the clinical care of paediatric emergency patients. They will be a credible nursing lead and role model within the Children’s Emergency Department.
- The post holder will be highly conversant in child and adult safeguarding policies and procedures. They will provide assurance that their staff have the necessary skills and knowledge to identify and communicate safeguarding concerns to the relevant professionals/agencies.
- The post holder will ensure that all staff are aware of, and meet the needs of patients and relatives in a courteous, helpful and compassionate manner, whilst ensuring returned respect for staff members.
- The post holder will maintain effective relationships between the multi-professional team in the clinical environment, the wider directorate group and the trust, ensuring specialist nursing advice is provided where required.
- The post holder will ensure that all areas have systems in place to identify, report and manage risk which involves taking action and monitoring work areas in accordance with health and safety legislation and the patient safety agenda.
- The post holder will work closely with the CED team, ward teams and department managers across all areas to improve patient flow.

Service delivery and improvement (quality)
- The post holder will be responsible for the professional and operational delivery of high quality clinical care standards across the specialty, ensuring that patients are always treated with dignity and respect.
- The post holder will be responsible for the promotion of patient safety and experience whilst working with their teams to deliver compliance with the 4 and 12 hour standards in emergency care.
