Job description
**About the job**
This post is an exciting opportunity to lead the local delivery of our Connecting People with Nature work on Natural England’s National Nature Reserves (NNRs) within the Cumbria Area Team. Working with local communities and visitors, our partners, NNR site staff, volunteers, Area Teams, the NNR Operations team and others, this role will help to deliver first class standards in visitor access, visitor experience, responsible recreation, community engagement and inclusive participation across our NNR Estate, ensuring our National Nature Reserves deliver for people and for nature.
**The role**
Working within the Cumbria Area Team, the purpose of the role is to take forward Natural England’s ambitions and approaches to visitor experience and recreational access management, local community engagement and communications on our NNRs.
This role provides an opportunity for the post holder to develop new workstreams to support our Connecting People With Nature priorities in targeted Cumbria NNR localities. The postholder will be working alongside Senior Reserve Managers, NNR site staff and volunteers, Inclusion Senior Advisers and others. They will be delivering engagement work on some of our priority NNRs alone, with colleagues, with partners or with our volunteers. They will also be providing guidance and advice and facilitating the sharing of good practice in some wider elements of our NNR engagement work across Cumbria.
The role is Cumbria wide and as such the postholder would be expected to support projects in a variety of locations across the county. Project locations will change over time with an initial priority being the proposed development of an Environmental Hub at Earnse Bay, on Walney Island associated with North Walney NNR. This is a partnership project, with development funding from National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF), where you will be required to work with less well served communities in the Barrow area to co-create plans for activities that connect people with nature.
A Penrith or Kendal base may be considered for a suitable job share applicant.
**Key tasks and responsibilities**
- Delivering first class and accessible visitor experiences at our most visited NNRs
- Ensuring relevant corporate visitor management standards are met at all NNRs, including signage & branding
- Facilitating delivery of Natural England’s wider Connecting People with Nature Programme priorities through our NNRs - working in collaboration with Inclusion Senior Advisers, Regional and Local Health and Environment Leads and other site staff to contribute to inclusion and health outcomes that meet local needs.
- Enabling wider community engagement through local partnership building to meet community needs - in particular around education, health, and inclusion.
- Supporting local delivery of emerging and future national strategic NNR engagement partnerships and opportunities
- Developing local NNR communication channels, including social media and other digital tools, to promote NNRs and our local and strategic communication priorities to a wider audience
- Ensuring sustainable access and visitor experiences through appropria
