The Education Department is keen to appoint an Assistant Headteacher: Secondary Education to join the department's team of Officers that support schools in Gwynedd. This post will focus on supporting Gwynedd secondary schools.

**RELEVANT EXPERIENCE**

ESSENTIAL

Ability to articulate a clear vision for school improvement;
Experience of leading a high school effectively and successfully.

Having provided guidance and used management skills effectively at senior level in schools;
Successfully managed school interventions and contributed towards significant sustainable improvement;
Be able to identify key themes for development and implementation from self-appraisal evidence and ensure that a need is met;
Experience of making a wider contribution to educational development.
Be able to evaluate the impact and implementation of local and national strategies towards further improving school performance;
Be able to challenge school performance, track and target setting procedures and deal with underperformance;
To be able to challenge bad practice and fail to transfer necessary agreed operations and hold senior management and governors accountable,

Demonstrate evidence of being able to manage and sustain change for improvement while achieving that competently;
Ability to understand, analyse, appraise and ensure the implementation of the principles and practice of quality assurance systems, including self-appraisal and school performance management.

Ability to think and work flexibly, innovatively, independently and strategically while also having strong collaborative and logístical skills;
Decisiveness in identifying key performance issues and being able to manage Gwynedd School Interventions including the ability to form precise views on school leadership and management;
Good use and understanding of ICT;
Being able to work under pressure and meet a tight schedule

Be willing to work outside normal working hours when necessary

DESIRABLE

Experience of improving a school other than their own or being an education improvement professional at the time with a significant leadership role in a school or local authority;
Broad experience in budget and staff management.

**SKILLS AND SPECIALIST KNOWLEDGE**

ESSENTIAL

Knowledge and understanding of the implications of current legislation and educational frameworks including improving schools facing difficulties;
Robust and complete understanding of what is quality in educational provision, characteristics of effective schools and the strategies for improving effective teaching practice and pupil successes.

A firm understanding of what constitutes effective school management, including employment law, equal opportunities and disability legislation, personel and finance.

Have knowledge of how collaboration and key partners, agencies and support services contribute to school improvement;

**Purpose of the Post.**

1. Ensuring that the people of Gwynedd are central to everything we do.
2. The Assistant Headteacher: Secondary Education is expected to undertake the post with direct reference to the Education Acts, Regulations, Codes of Practice and associated legislation relating to the post.

**Main Duties**

The Assistant Headteacher is expected to undertake the post by direct reference to the Education Acts, Regulations, Codes of Practice and associated legislation relating to the post.

It is a challenging job, requiring high levels of inter-personal, communication and leadership skills, defined by National Standards with managerial and strategic responsibilities at an area level and a whole service in terms of education improvement services within Gwynedd as determined by the Head of Education.

To be effective, the Assistant Head needs to:
(i) be able to relate well with others;
(ii) demonstrate the ability to influence and persuade others to a
