London, United Kingdom New York University Full time

New York University: NYU - Global: NYU London

**Location**:

- NYU London

**Open Date**:

- Mar 26, 2024

**Deadline**:

- Apr 29, 2024 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time

**Description**:
NYU London is currently recruiting for a part-time lecturer to teach Postcolonial Visual Culture, a course sponsored by Stenhardt's Media, Culture, and Communication Department at New York University. Teaching commences in the autumn term (Sept-Dec 2024).

**Course Description**
- This class addresses how colonialism and postcolonialism are shaped and mediated through images and the gaze. The dynamics of colonial history motivate and shape colonial and postcolonial perceptions and influence their patterns of global circulation when the boundary between the world out there and the nation at home is increasingly blurred. Course materials will survey a range of image texts through various media (photography, television, cinema) and sites (war, the harem, refugee camps, prisons, disasters); nationalist mobilization, counter-insurgency, urban conflict, disaster management, the prison system, and the war on terror.- Upon completion of this course, students will:
- demonstrate an understanding of visual analysis;
- recognize some of the aesthetics of postcolonial visual worlds;
- know key theoretical debates in the fields of visual culture and postcolonial theory;
- be able to analyze how varied 'medias' connect to race, place, and identity across a variety of global contexts;
**Expectation of Hours**:
This is a 4-credit class, which calls for total contact hours equaling 35 hours. The semester is 15 weeks (14 weeks of teaching plus an exam week) and there are 2.5 hours of classroom instruction each week. In addition to the time required for course preparation, classroom instruction, and marking, the instructor is required to hold a minimum of one set 60-minute “office hour” at NYU London per week, during which time she or he will be available to meet with students.

**Teaching information**:
Instructors are encouraged to use a variety of pedagogical techniques. This typically includes a combination of lecture
- and discussion-based class sessions, as well as the use of student activities, such as debate exercises, flipped classroom environments, and experimental simulations.

In addition to required midterms and final exams, instructors may use a variety of assignments to assess student comprehension of the course material. These may include online weekly homework, writing assignments, short student presentations, and in-class multiple-choice quizzes. Instructors may select the mix that is more appropriate to their teaching methodology.

Instructors should be prepared to teach in-person and simultaneously to be prepared for remote instruction should circumstances require it. NYU uses Zoom as its primary platform for remote instruction.
