An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Specialist Technical Officer to support the delivery of translational research activities at St John’s Institute of Dermatology. The post holder will join a large interdisciplinary team of clinicians, scientists and study management personnel to deliver our internationally leading skin research programmes in three, interrelated areas with high unmet needs - immune-mediated diseases, cancer and rare disease. This is an opportunity to work with the largest skin bioresource in the UK, in an academic laboratory setting.

This post will be offered on a fixed-term contract until 2026.

This is a full time post - 100% full time equivalent. 35 hours per week.

Key responsibilities

To oversee the processing and storage of human biological samples as they are collected at St John’s Institute of Dermatology clinics and external sites, ensuring local SOPs are adhered to.

To ensure that all sample processes/storage/use are documented accurately and in a timely manner in the relevant databases.

To guarantee a constant supply of skin/cells (e.g. keratinocytes) for use by different groups within the department.

To maintain good working relations and to promote effective teamwork.

To assist in general lab maintenance and organization either in collaboration with an experienced scientist or more independently.

To assist with relevant paperwork and administration to meet Good, Clinical laboratory Practice (GCLP) Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and Trust guidelines.

To help with day-to-day sample processing in case of staff shortage/annual leave/absence

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria
- Experience of working in an academic research laboratory.
- Laboratory experience in sample processing (DNA/RNA extraction from blood/cells/skin, PBMCs isolation) and cell culture.
- Knowledge of laboratory procedures and standard operating procedures
- GCP training and HTA training, or willingness to work towards it.
- Ability to work without direct supervision; to manage own workload, work methodically with excellent attention to detail and display good organizational ability.
- Commitment to personal and professional development.

Desirable criteria
- Knowledge or experience of storage facilities for biological materials
