The Role

Do you have experience in clinical research with high level oversight of operational activities, data systems and governance, and quality assurance?

This is an exciting opportunity to join Newcastle Clinical Trials Unit as a Head of Operations, to develop further and increase the efficiency of structures to support the design, development, coordination and management of clinical trials to the highest quality standards, and leading in matters of research governance, adherence to regulatory requirements, quality assurance and financial management. The role has a key leadership and strategic element working alongside other senior staff in the management and development of NCTU.

In this role, you’ll be based at our Newcastle Upon Tyne campus that has fantastic transport links and is in the heart of the city centre.

You will report to the Director of NCTU and with the Deputy Director, Clinical Deputy Director, will be part of NCTU’s Leadership Team. You will also interact with the Head of Faculty Operations. You’ll be joining a team of nearly 70 staff, with a further 30 in the Biostatistics Research Group with 7 of them currently being your direct reports.

We are an organisation that champions collaboration and in this role, you’ll be responsible for forging close links with other research groups within Newcastle and expanding the research collaborative network. Under the overall direction of the Unit Directors, you’ll ensure strong and effective working links between NCTU and all associated organisations and bodies within the Faculty.

You’ll act as the key link and representative with other Trials Units, Sponsor organisations, potential Sponsor organisations, the UKCRC, Research Support Service, and other relevant external organisations and groups working with others as required.

As a Head of Operations, you’ll provide senior business and research management expertise and input to drive NCTU strategic development and delivery. This means you’ll need a good understanding of and senior level expertise in, research management and governance and provision of infrastructure support.

Background

NCTU is a UKCRC registered clinical trials unit that brings together academic, clinical, methodological and trial management expertise from across Newcastle Health Innovation Partners (NHIP) to deliver world class clinical trials of all phases and designs. The Unit also collaborates with regional and national clinical key opinion leaders, other CTUs and with Industry.

The Unit leads primarily on the design, conduct and analysis of national and international multi-centre trials and staff, with specialist disease and methodological knowledge, have input at all stages of the trial lifecycle, thus ensuring all activities are conducted according to the principles of ICH GCP and in compliance with the appropriate regulatory and ethical requirements. Current therapeutic areas of expertise include Rare Disease, Respiratory Medicine, Intensive Care, Urology, ENT, Cardiovascular Disease, Surgery, and Oncology, with the remainder of our portfolio arising from other therapeutic areas.

The team works with The Biostatistics Research Group, to develop and deliver innovations in trial methodology to improve outcomes for patients. Training and developing staff and the next generation of trialists are also key areas of focus. The Unit is a key partner in the NIHR Research Support Service Hub delivered by Newcastle University and Partners.

- Work closely with the Unit Directors in the development, implementation and annual review of NCTU’s Business Plan and strategy
- Identify and develop the infrastructure and systems necessary for the smooth and efficient operational running of NCTU
- Attend and / or Chair, and contribute to, key committees and management groups including the NCTU Senior Management team, NCTU Executive Advisory Board
- Ensure Public Patient Involvement activities and the commitment to EDI across all therapeutic areas within the unit are maintained
- Direct the recruitment of NCTU staff and provide information and assistance on appointments, resignations and contract renewals, ensuring continuity of staff and resources
