Senior Building Surveyor

Summary We are looking for a Senior Building Surveyor with a strong knowledge of building surveying and historic properties. The role will be focused primarily on the western half of Cornwall, but will at times take on work elsewhere in Cornwall or further afieldin the South West region.
You’ll have an in-depth conservation building knowledge, a high level of experience and the ability to work at pace in complex technical situations.
The role is part of the National Trust Consultancy, which is the home to specialists in every field of our work. This knowledge enables our places to benefit from an extraordinary range of creative thinking, as well as deep expertise in all matters relatingto our twin purpose of caring for the nation’s heritage and landscapes, and making these accessible to all.
We use a hybrid working model which enables a mix of home, office and on site working. We expect that there will be travel to properties or the hub 3 days a week.
What you'll be doing You’ll work alongside other Building Surveyors and be supported by the wider building surveying community in the South West and nationally. There are opportunities to grow professional experience in terms of Conservation Accreditation following the RICSConservation Accreditation pathway. You’ll also work closely with colleagues from aligned job disciplines including archaeology, curatorial and environmental advisers, and contract and finance colleagues.
You’ll be working across a range of properties that include mansion houses, historic farmsteads, archaeological and civil structures and a diverse array of other built structures. You’ll be responsible for the provision of an excellent building service tothese places, and you’ll take work from inception to delivery. You’ll provide expert advice, proactive support, and delivery of building work to the highest conservation standards. Your work will be focussed on large-scale planned maintenance and on high valueproject work for our in-hand estate. You’re likely to act as project manager, managing external advisers. You’ll contribute to project planning and conservation condition assessments.
Building relationships with stakeholders is key. This includes National Trust staff at local sites (notably General Managers and Facilities Managers) as well as regional and national specialists, contractors, relevant local authority officers and neighbouringlandowners. You’ll be able to clearly communicate the essential elements of the work and collaborate on finding the best solutions.
Who we're looking for Someone who can:
- Understand how different tasks need to balance conservation, access, and financial restrictions to deliver the best long-term outcomes for the organisation
- Be agile enough to ensure things get the appropriate attention when something unexpected and urgent arises
- Be able to think creatively around the use of external consultants and contractors to deliver our strategy
To be successful in this role you will have:
- Full membership of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors/Chartered Institute of Building. We will also consider architects who are ARB (Architects Registration Board) members, with ideally 5 years post attainment experience.
- A good knowledge of professional building consultancy across complex portfolios, with knowledge of building conservation, defect diagnosis, maintenance, and repair.
- A strong track record of planning and delivering a programme of works/project, with a value up to £500k.
- An understanding of relevant legislation and best practice
- A knowledge of contract appointment and administration
- Experience of financial responsibility for projects and cyclical work with exemplary data management.
- Excellent verbal and written communication, with great interpersonal skills
- Are focused, organised and skilled in prioritising your work
A full driving license will be required for travel to our properties (mileage allowance will be paid for work travel).
