**The Team**

The What Works Team is part of the Chief Scientist’s Directorate in Natural England. This Directorate is responsible for Natural England’s Science, Evidence and Evaluation Strategy and supports its implementation to ensure Natural England is an evidence-led organisation and a leader in applied environmental science. The What Works team leads on developing, synthesising, and sharing robust, accessible, and timely evidence on the implementation, impact and cost effectiveness of environmental policy and operations. Our aim is to enable the achievement of environmental, social and economic outcomes both within Natural England and externally.

Job description

**About the role**

This is a new role. You will help to deliver a programme of activities and products to make Natural England’s evidence easily accessible, understandable, and useful. Thus, ensuring the decisions of our Board and Executive leadership team, policy advisors and nature recovery delivery of front line staff and colleagues in central government are evidence-led. Producing easy to use products that improve the use of and understanding of evidence will be a core part of your role in the programme. Being able to engage with and understand what our colleagues and stakeholders need to do their job more effectively and efficiently will be essential, along with how we can shape evidence processes and products to meet their needs. In your role you will add to the evidence base of what works at the interface of science, policy and practice.

As part of the What Works team you’ll work closely with evaluation, indicators & metrics and evidence synthesis colleagues ensuring their key messages get heard and used. You will be expected to work across the Chief Scientist Directorate, engaging with topic specialists, the SEE workstream leads, Data Science Service & Evidence colleagues, as well as engaging with colleagues in other parts of Natural England and Defra. Your proactive, inclusive, and collaborative working with others will be vital to the success of our knowledge into practice projects.

**Key Tasks**
- Use your experience in knowledge exchange (the 2 way exchange of ideas, research evidence, experiences and skills) to support Natural England’s transformation to be an evidence-led organisation.
- Help improve the use of best available evidence by policy and our delivery teams.
- Support the team on various aspects of knowledge exchange product development & implementation.
- Build and maintain strong connections and relationships with key internal and external stakeholders to understand their knowledge needs.
- Manage a mailbox that supports the use of Defra Library Services to ensure all Natural England staff have awareness and access to wider academic research.

**Specialist skills and knowledge**
- Experience of science-policy-practice interactions and/ or producing knowledge exchange products like technical notes, surveys, research papers, guidance etc (essential).
