Ecg Training Day Volunteer

Birmingham, United Kingdom Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust Full time

A volunteer is required to assist with the ECG training programme at BSMHFT. The volunteer would be required to act as a patient volunteer for the trainees to perform ECG’s.

An electrocardiogram is an investigation which produces a trace of the electrical activity of the heart, and is an important diagnostic procedure completed as part of routine physical health assessment on admission, as well as for monitoring purposes.

The BSMHFT staff ECG training consists of one training day per month, where staff are taught by the Physical Health Clinical Educator and the ECG technicians how to complete an ECG correctly.

The afternoon part of the training day requires a volunteer to act as a simulated patient, to allow the trainees to practice performing ECG’s. The volunteer would be required to lie on an examination couch for up to 20 minutes at a time whilst the staff being trained complete an ECG on them.

The volunteer would have to remove their clothes from the waist up, have ECG electrodes placed on their limbs and chest, and be connected to an ECG machine to have their trace recorded. Dignity and privacy will be maintained throughout the process and the trainees will be supervised and guided by a senior ECG technician and the ECG training coordinator. The volunteer will have to interact with the trainees as a real patient would - for example giving a fabricated date of birth and health information, and should provide brief feedback to the trainees to help guide and develop their learning.

Welcome to Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust. Our 4000 clinical and support staff help us to improve mental health wellbeing and meet the needs of the 70,000 people we serve each year. We provide a range of mental healthcare services across Birmingham and Solihull, as well as specialised services nationally. We also offer medical, nursing and psychology training and are proud of our international reputation for both research and innovation.

Our population is culturally diverse, characterised in places by high levels of deprivation which create an increasing demand for our services and a necessity for us to make sure everyone can access the help they need. We are a team of compassionate, inclusive and committed people working together to provide excellent care to support our community. If you are looking for a place to belong, where you can make a real difference to people’s lives, join our team where our warm welcome is waiting for you.
