Purpose of role:
We know that loneliness and isolation can have a significant impact on health and quality of life. The friendly conversation and companionship offered by our telephone befrienders will make a genuine difference to our client’s lives, helping them to feel happier, positive and more connected.

Main tasks and responsibilities:

- Participate in initial training and induction.
- Telephone the client (friendly, uplifting chat) on a weekly basis for an agreed period of time. Provide sign posting information where appropriate.
- Keep an efficient record of calls for monitoring and information purposes.
- Participate in debriefing sessions and supervision with the Volunteer Coordinator.
- Work co-operatively with New Height’s staff and volunteers.
- Encourage clients to attend groups and activities New Heights provide (if appropriate).
- Attend and undertake volunteer meetings and training as appropriate to develop skills. Conform to the organisations policies and procedures, including data protection, confidentiality, safeguarding adults and safeguarding children.

- Friendly and approachable.
- Good listener and ability to communicate effectively.
- Good sense of humour.
- A commitment to supporting people who are isolated and lonely.
- An understanding of the issues faced by people who are isolated and lonely.
- Ability to maintain boundaries and confidentiality.
- Pragmatic approach to resolving problems.
- Ability and willingness to complete project paperwork.
- Willingness to participate in initial and ongoing training sessions.
