Barnardo’s is committed to providing ‘Better Outcomes for More Children’. Our children’s services volunteers help the charity to deliver essential services in local communities, providing support to over 300,000 children, young people and their families. This role provides a great opportunity to join our fantastic children’s services and help make a real difference. **Barnardo’s Mentors** work with young people and adults on a 1:1 basis, offering practical assistance and emotional support, to build their self-confidence, coping mechanisms and positive relationships. The work could be focused on a particular need, such as gaining employment or accessing training, or it could be more focused around life skills and independent living. This is a newly formed Early Help mentoring service with the aim to take action to support children and young people pre-crisis. The service will be working across 10 localities (Sutton Coldfield, Erdington, Perry Barr, Ladywood, Hodge Hill, Yardley, Hall Green, Selly Oak, Edgbaston & Northfield). The service will support ages ranging from 11-19 (up to 25 with SEND) and will be primarily delivered at schools/colleges. Barnardo’s will work with Birmingham Children’s Trust to lead a high-quality mentoring/befriending service that is committed to flexibility, innovation, and the Early Help system - improving children and young people’s wellbeing and preventing needs from escalating. We are aware of the high demand for wellbeing support, and that mental health issues are one of the most common factors in Early Help Connections. Meaningful mentorship can have a huge impact on children and young people’s wellbeing, if realistic goals are set within the 6-week timeframe. We aim to deliver at scale, reaching 500-600 young people per year. The service will be delivered by an experienced, dynamic, and wide-reaching partnership comprising of: Barnardo’s, Our Place and Birmingham City University. The service’s approach will be goal orientated, working with children and young people as a short-term intervention, over a period of 6-weeks. Dependent on the child or young person’s needs this work could be focused on a particular need, such as gaining employment, accessing resources, developing specific coping strategies or it could be more focused around life skills and independent living. Research has shown that effective mentorship can be hugely impactful on a young person. The mentoring process gives young people an opportunity to be truly heard and valued. Leaving long lasting positive effects on the individuals life. This service aims to support with children and young people’s wellbeing by setting and achieving realistic goals with the focus being on what the mentee themselves would like to gain from the process. Barnardo’s are seeking volunteers, with a passion for making a difference in young people’s lives. Have a friendly and approachable attitude and an ability to engage young people and adults, empowering them to take steps towards improving their situation and achieving their goals. We are looking for individuals who are committed to offering up 5-6 hours of their time per week. This includes prepping for sessions, travelling and writing up a summary after each session. Training and supervision will be provided prior to commencing work with mentees. Volunteers will be responsible in recording their hours via the Barnardo’s volunteering app. Barnardo’s are committed to providing high-quality support to children and young people and will therefore require a minimum of 6 months commitment when working with this service.
