**Job summary**:
Do you want to make a tangible difference to the lives of children across England? Can you use your skills to be a catalyst for creating meaningful change? Are you ready to join a committed team dedicated to giving children and young people a voice on the issues affecting them?

Now is the perfect time to join the Children’s Commissioner’s office (CCo) following the publication of ‘The Big Ambition’, a campaign hearing directly from children and young people across England about what they need to make their lives better. In the lead up to the next General Election, the Children’s Commissioner wants to take children’s thoughts, opinions and ideas to decision-makers, to ensure that the Government reflects children’s voices in the decisions that will affect them in years to come.

What children want and need underpins all the work we do, with the Children’s Commissioner working across sectors, Government, and the civil service to deliver for their needs.

Joining the team is a chance to be involved in shaping children’s policy, making sure children’s voices are heard and be part of an exciting environment which puts children’s needs at the heart of everything they do.

We are working to make the changes children said mattered to them. And we’re looking for dedicated, highly skilled people to join the team.

**Job description**:
The Children’s Commissioner for England sits at the heart of Government, delivering for children and championing their voices and needs. This includes a particular responsibility towards children who rely on the state for their safety or protection.

The Children’s Commissioner is a unique statutory role with powers to help bring about long-term change and improvements for children. Their messages to policy and decision makers, leaders of industry, charities and sometimes parents provide insight, evidence and challenge to us all to provide the best support possible for children as they grow up.

As part of the Policy team, the Policy Adviser will contribute to a range of policy priorities, support the delivery of evidence-based projects, and produce clear and concise policy notes on emerging issues. They will have a demonstrable ability to synthesize complex policy problems into clear analysis and simple language, and an interest in public policy relating to children and young people, particularly within the Commissioner’s priority areas.

The post holder will support CCo’s work in each of the focus areas, with a particular focus on youth justice, and will inform our wider evidence base, working closely across teams to collaborate on cross cutting policy.

Whilst the post holder has specific responsibilities, as a member of a small team, it will be necessary to become familiar with other associated aspects of the Policy team in order to support and provide cover for colleagues during busy periods and absences.

**Duties**
- Monitoring the policy landscape across government departments and Parliament.
- Responding to policy consultations on behalf of the Children’s Commissioner.
- Working on specific policy projects as outlined in the Children’s Commissioner’s business plan, listening to and interpreting the experience of children and young people, and understanding the policy issues involved.
- Attending and delivering policy briefings to the Children’s Commissioner and significant stakeholders.
- Participating in qualitative research projects in partnership with the Research team.
- Analysing existing policy and formulating reasoned and evidence-based arguments for change.
- Working with colleagues to inform the commissioning of research and gathering of evidence, using the Commissioner’s statutory powers, to develop a robust evidence base which supports the Commissioner’s policy work.
- Producing fluently argued, highly credible external facing products and briefings, ensuring that outputs are of a high quality and meet the standards expected by the Children’s Commissioner.
- Building and maintaining relationships with key external stakeholders, achieving recognition for our agenda throughout Whitehall, and turning policy propositions into real legislative and regulatory change.

**Person specification**:
**Essential Skills/Requirements**

Knowledge and Experience
- 5 GCSE’s or equivalent.
- Strong knowledge of the policy-making process across Whitehall and Parliament.
- Good understanding of research methodologies and able to interpret quantitative/qualitat
