Bereavement Officer/mortuary Assistant

Please see supporting information for full Job Description. Purpose of Post: To provide advice and support to bereaved relatives, coroners officer and staff within the Trust. This role includes seeing bereaved families, ensuring that any paperwork and personal belongings are ready for them to collect and offering advice and support regarding the practical steps following a death. Assist the mortuary team, including cleaning, receipt and release of deceased patients, facilitating viewings and other duties as they may arise.
Under supervision, the post holder will assist Anatomical Pathology Technologists (APTs) in the day-to-day functioning and satisfactory standard of the mortuary. You will perform daily routine procedures and maintain a high standard of mortuary hygiene. Under supervision, the post holder may assist APTs in some aspects of post mortem and related work. Duties/Responsibilities of the role Under supervision participate in the provision of an effective service (technical and administrative), as appropriate, to the requirements of the Mortuary department.
Under supervision carry out daily recording of post mortem details, and the maintenance of Eden, other databases and mortuary records, as required. Under supervision assist in receiving deceased patients in strict accordance with mortuary procedures. Under supervision carry out the release of deceased patients in accordance with the law and departmental procedures. Under supervision, assist with the preparation of deceased patients for viewing by relatives.
Use the departments software system, Eden, to record patient information, details of viewings and other information, as required. Deal with possessions/monies of deceased patients and ensure completion of relevant documentation. Maintain the security of deceased belongings, valuables and drugs received into the Mortuary. Maintain the departments diary, arranging appointments and interviews as appropriate.
Assist with the bereavement booklet to reflect any changes to the department. Undertake general office duties including, sorting & distributing post, photocopying, filing and other administrative duties To assist with non-complicated face to face meetings regarding the procedures following a death and arrangements they need to make, including supporting them through a distressing and emotional time with practical help and guidance. To arrange, if required, a meeting between the relatives and doctors. To forward any requests to the Chaplaincy Department from relatives for further support.
To liaise with ward staff to ensure that the deceased patients property has been administered correctly. To liaise with the mortuary staff, contract Funeral Director, Chaplaincy Department, Crematorium and relatives when making funeral arrangements. To register the death and arrange the funeral of the deceased where next of kin is unknown and no one else is able to organise/fund the funeral with the support of Senior APT/Mortuary Manager. To administer all the relevant documentation necessary for the interment of NVFs To assist in the preparation of the casket for NVFs for a woodland burial.
In periods of leave / sickness within the team ensure patient flow continues, which may require extra hours. Report any queries or concerns to Mortuary and Bereavement Services Manager To attend training relevant to bereavement Knowledge, skills and experience required: Highly evolved empathetic and self-awareness skills to deal with bereaved families who may have barriers to understanding information due to their grief or disability. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. The ability to work in a highly pressurised, unpredictable environment where bereavement care is central to the service delivery.
Specialist knowledge of various faith groups funeral wishes/practices to enable respectful compliance with tight and specific timescales and procedures. Demonstrate a good working knowledge and understanding of the Human Tissue Act and, compliance with the HTA regulations at all times. Computer literate to use multiple IT software for recording personal identifiable data. Key Result Areas: Be able to juggle conflicting demands, prioritise tasks and deal with queries as they arise.
Identify relatives concerns and escalate them appropriately. Full compliance with secure handling of patient identifiable data is essential. Communications and Key Working Relationships: Mortuary and Bereavement Team Medical Examiner Officers Hospital doctors HM Coroner and officers Spiritual/Faith community leads Registrars of births and deaths Bereaved relatives, carers and executors/solicitors. Funeral Directors Most challenging part of the role: Regular interaction with the bereaved relatives in person or over the telephone.
