Our volunteer’s workforce provides extra support to our patients, their families and our staff. They hold a valuable sense of community and their hard work, dedication and friendliness enhance the patient and family experience here at WWL.

Volunteers extend the skills and the scale of the resources available within WWL and provide the opportunity to deliver a broader range of services, offering a caring connection to patients and visitors.

Activities and Ward volunteers provide companionship and support to our patients, some of whom maybe in hospital for a long period of time and not everyone in hospital has regular visitors. As a ward or activities volunteer you could make a difference to a patients stay at WWL as you will offer a support framework.

An activity session is vital for not only creating and developing interactions and experiences for our patients, but it also provides multiple pathways of emotional support, reassurance and companionship to patients and their families.

As an Activities volunteer your duties will be varied and extensive including:
Report to senior nurse on arrival (sign in)

Always introduce yourself.

Always use the patients preferred name.

To take on an active role within the volunteer’s activities team, supporting the planning and undertaking a varied programme of activities

Assist, encourage and enable patients to play as full a part as they are able, or desire, in activities available.

Talking to patients, reading with or to patients, doing crosswords, playing dominoes etc

You will help to provide a variety of activities for patients such as

playing board games,

reading

Art

Quizzes

Crosswords

Bingo (Single or within a bay/ward)

or general conversation.

We have activities and games in the dementia trolley available Twiddle Muffs, twiddle blankets and dolls are available for individual use.

Volunteers will take on an active role within the activities team, supporting the activities carer in planning and undertaking a varied programme of activities.

Volunteers will engage in activities to help maintain cognitive capabilities.

Many of our patients with dementia like to chat and reminisce. Calling a patient by their name, a touch on the shoulder or holding a hand can make a big difference.

Provide companionship.

Ensure that patients’ needs are met in a way that respects their choice, dignity, privacy, independence.

To be familiar and comply with all WWL Volunteer policies.

To be of a friendly, cheerful disposition, enjoy working with people and have good communication skills.

To always put our patients’ individual needs first

To listen and follow any instructions given by ward staff relating patients present on the ward.

To be honest, reliable, and adaptable to undertake a variety of tasks.

Ward Volunteers must be friendly, polite, caring and compassionate.

To work effectively, both independently and as part of a team

Dementia information session will be available to all volunteers.

Advise ward manager/nurse in charge of any problems that may arise.

To be honest, reliable and adaptable to undertake a variety of tasks.

Working collaboratively and as part of a team with all colleagues and volunteers in order to provide an exceptional experience for WWL patients.

Inform ward staff when leaving at end of shift.

All volunteers are asked to ensure that they sign-in and out of the wards/departments/desks to confirm attendance and to conform to trust dress policy.

ID badges must be worn at all times whilst on duty.

Occupational Health

This role requires the volunteer to undergo an initial Occupational Health check part of which may include the need to be immunized.

Training

Statutory and Mandatory Training (required every 3 years)

Information Governance Training (required every year)

Volunteers will also require an Enhanced Adults DBS check

This role will include 1 to 1 support for our patients which will include:
121 Activities, 121 Feeding and peer to peer support.

All training will be run internally to allow you to complete your role we would not expect you to complete any of the above without training which will be provided once the checks have been completed.
