**Overview of the role**

The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman (PPO) is an Arm’s Length Body (ALB) of the Ministry of Justice. We have three key duties:

- to investigate complaints made by prisoners, young people in detention, offenders under probation supervision and immigration detainees; and
- to investigate deaths of prisoners, young people in detention, approved premises’ residents and immigration detainees.
- to investigate deaths of recently released prisoners that occur within 14 days of release from prison (except homicide).

The Communications Officer supports the Communications and Media Manager and the Ombudsman to deliver internal and external communications for the organisation.

The post holder will report into the Communications and Media Manager. They will need to have good judgement and be able to present the work of the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman’s office in a positive way.

The PPO is based at the HM Government hub at 10 South Colonnade, Canary Wharf, London. Currently, staff are expected to attend the office two days a week (based on full time hours), with the rest of the time spent working at home or in commuter hubs. You will usually have flexibility to decide which days of the week you work in the office to enable you to manage your office attendance around your personal circumstances. There will be occasions when you will be required to attend the office (for example, office or function-wide meetings).

If you are successful, you may need to attend the office more frequently in your first six weeks, to undertake key training and induction activity.

The salary range is £35,405- £39,000

To support the production and issuing of internal and external communications for the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman, to maximise the effectiveness of investigations and to contribute to sharing learning with the services in remit, and other stakeholders, in order to effect change.

**Internal and external communications, and web content management**:
You will support the Communications and Media Manager on a range of internal priority workstreams, advising them, our Senior Leadership Team and staffing groups on internal communications messaging and long-term strategic communications planning.

You will also support the management of the PPO’s external reputation and the production and issuing of stakeholder communication materials. This will include creating materials to be used by corporate and operational teams in their day-to-day engagement, as well as bespoke communications to our stakeholders.

You will assist in maintaining, developing, and creating content for our corporate website, using insight and analysis to deliver continuous improvement.

**Stakeholder Management**

You will develop a range of high-quality stakeholder and internal communications to ensure our stakeholders and colleagues are aware of corporate priorities and the objectives expressed in our Business Plan and Strategic Plan.

You will disseminate messages through a range of established channels and contribute your own ideas for new and better ways to communicate.

**Day to day tasks will include**:

- Providing advice and support to cross-office projects and delivering the Ombudsman’s priorities.
- Executing the communications strategy for the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman’s office and working collaboratively with the Communications and Media Manager and staff across the office to ensure the action plan is delivered in line with strategic plans
- Maintaining and growing a social media presence for the office and proactively managing comments aimed at the organisation
- Keeping external communication methods under review and advising the Communications and Media Manager and Ombudsman on how they can be developed to have greater influence
- Supporting and leading the delivery of internal and external communication campaigns
- Managing and delivering the publication of the PPO’s Annual Report
- Managing the communications inbox, escalating media queries to the Communications and Media Manager as necessary.
- Assisting in cross-office events to enable staff to be engaged and informed
