Renal Vascular Fellow

This is a replacement post of the Renal/Vascular Fellow based in the Renal department. The post holder will work within the multi-disciplinary team, providing care for patients and their vascular access requirements preparing for and undergoing Haemodialysis. Patients are referred to King's from a diverse area. In addition, the individual will be required to play an active role in the Department, with the opportunity to for clinical research, audit and quality improvement in renal disease.

The remit of the post holder is to assist the vascular surgeons from KCH and our partner trust (Guys and St Thomas NHS Trust) GSTT with the vascular access workload. The post-holder will be based at the KCH site, Denmark Hill, undertaking daily triage of access problems through walk-ins, outpatient clinics, and the ward. There are also renal vascular access clinics off site at our satellite dialysis units which the post holder will support when needed. The role entails liaising with the surgeon on duty, the radiology department and other clinical teams to implement an optimal plan for each patient’s diverse needs. All of this work will have consultant support.

This is a Trust post and does not form part of an approved training program at present. The post is offered on a 1 year contract in the first instance.

1. To work as key point of contact onsite for all access related queries, working alongside access specialist nursing team to triage walk in/ward patients and devise management plan, with support from vascular surgeons as required

2. To assist vascular operating lists

3. To attend outpatient clinics alongside vascular surgeons

4. To co-ordinate the surgical care of renal patients where it relates to renal replacement therapy.

5. To be part of the audit, quality improvement process of the department

6. To be part of the clinical research team to deliver the Divisional Research and Development Strategy.

7. To supervise junior staff as appropriate

Inpatients

The Victor Parsons Renal Unit is a twenty-eight bed inpatient area in King's College Hospital (KCH) (Denmark Hill site). The area is dedicated to the care of renal patients and is staffed by the renal nursing team in two areas, designated Fisk Ward and Cheere Ward.

Dialysis Areas

There is a dialysis unit with 20 stations based at King College Hospital, Denmark Hill. Satellite dialysis facilities are based at Woolwich Hospital (10 stations), Darent Valley Hospital Dartford (12 stations), Bromley (20 stations), Dulwich Hospital (20 stations), Thamesmead (20 stations) and Sydenham (18 stations). We plan to open a new unit in Brixton in 2024 in collaboration with Guys and St Thomas Hospital.

Dialysis is also performed on Fisk and Cheere inpatient wards, primarily for the care of acute kidney injury patients and for ESRF patients who are in hospital.

Clinic Areas

Haemodialysis and vascular access clinics are run in our main outpatient dialysis unit at Kings and also in our renal outpatient area, in addition to satellite dialysis clinics.

The post holder will contribute to vascular access outpatient work within this role.

Peritoneal dialysis patients are seen as outpatients, and for training in the Renal Clinic Area at KCH. We have an innovative service providing insertion and repositioning of peritoneal dialysis catheters under local anaesthetic.

There are General Nephrology Clinics KCH on Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons. A combined Diabetic-Renal clinic operates on Monday mornings. At PRUH there are General Nephrology clinics on a Wednesday and Friday and at QEH, Woolwich on a Friday. Renal Immunology clinic runs on Thursdays.
