The Department is situated in the Princess Anne Wing where there is an excellent dedicated ultrasound department, three operating theatres, a day assessment clinic and both maternity and gynaecology wards. There are plans underway to expand the Day Assessment Unit and build an alongside Maternity Unit. There is currently one 40 bedded maternity ward.

The department currently provides up to 98 hours dedicated consultant presence on labour ward and all consultants currently participate in a 1 in 11 on call rota out of hours covering both obstetrics and gynaecology. There is a same day emergency gynaecology service staffed by a clinician every week day morning.

The holder of this post will be a Consultant in the department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology with a special interest in gynaecological cancer diagnostics. They will be expected to take on the lead role in navigating and developing the gynaecological cancer diagnostic pathways.

The maternity service has approximately 5,000 deliveries per year with 1500 of these delivering in one of the three community maternity units. The unit is supported with a dedicated maternity theatre, a level 2 NICU and a tertiary fetal medicine unit in Bristol. A recent CQC inspection of the maternity unit rated the service as ‘outstanding’.

There are in excess of 5000 outpatient attendances per year with 2000 day case and in-patient procedures. There is a tertiary level gynae-oncology, reproductive medicine and urogynaecology service.

The post will be based at the RUH and the holder will participate in audit and directorate meetings and undertake administrative duties as required by the Lead Clinicians for obstetrics and gynaecology.

A commitment to maintain professional expertise by attendance at meetings and courses is expected, and completion of diaries for CME is essential. It is also essential that you have an annual appraisal.

An interest in research and teaching is expected with participation in projects, courses, etc. to enhance the standing and role of the Department and Trust.
