Band 4 Trainee Payroll Officer

**Job summary**:
As an ever expanding dept, there are progression opportunities available on a regular basis. We expect our staff to be hard working, able to meet strict deadlines and work as part of a growing team. You will have responsibility for your own section of work, and after initial training will be expected to manage your own workload.
Payroll is a vital component of the NHS and we embrace the challenges that the complexities of NHS terms and conditions give to us, to ensure our staff are paid accurately and on time
**Main duties, tasks & skills required**:
You will have responsibility for your own section of work, and after initial training will be expected to manage your own workload. You will be responsible for processing new starters, leavers, changes to contract, sickness payments, maternity payments etc. You will be able to calculate tax and national insurance deductions manually and have a good payroll knowledge of both legislation and NHS terms and conditions of service after the period of training

**Qualifications**:
**Essential**:
- Minimum of 5 GCSE's at grade C or above to include Maths and English
- ECDL or equivalent computer skills as a minimum
**Desirable**:
- Excellent working knowledge of all payroll regulations
- CIPP - (D)
**Experience**:
**Essential**:
- IT Skills
- Good numeracy skills
- Able to manage own work load
- Able to work unsupervised.
**Desirable**:
- Experience working in an NHS payroll environment
- Experience of managing own workload and payroll allocation
- Knowledge of HMRC and Dept of Works & Pensions regulations relating to payroll
**Additional Criteria**:
**Essential**:
- Excellent customer care skills in promoting reputation of payroll function
- Ability to provide explanations of actions taken and other information both verbally and in writing and in a professional manner.
- Ability to use Microsoft office software to complete existing templates and spreadsheets
- Ability to prioritise workload and meet strict deadlines
- Proven interpersonal skills to build and maintain relationships
- Ability to adopt a flexible approach, working on own initiative as well as part of a team
- Excellent telephone manner
- Attention to detail and accuracy
