We are looking for a strong communications leader with a proven track record to lead the high performing NHS England communications and engagement team in the East of England.

You will manage and develop a small and highly effective team of eight communicators, responsible for operational and strategic communications including media management, crisis response, internal comms, digital, parliamentary and campaigns.

You will report directly to both the National Director of Communications and the NHSE Regional Director for the East of England. You will work as a trusted advisor to the Regional Director, working as an integral member of the regional executive team and providing strategic counsel on communications and engagement issues.

You will be responsible for the engagement of our c700 staff, leading communications for the ongoing NHSE change programme, overseeing high-profile staff development events, and supporting the evolution of an open and compassionate culture across the region. 

Please note that the reason for the fixed term of your contract is: short term vacancy.
- The postholder will act as the NHS communications leader for the region providing professional leadership to the regional communications and engagement team and NHS communicators across providers and ICSs in the region.

They will hold effective working relationships with communications leaders across national system partners, Government and influential stakeholder organisations accounting for regional
- communications to help promote and protect the reputation of the NHS in the East of England.
- Informed by conversations with key stakeholders, this individual will be expected to lead the development of the regional communications strategy to support delivery of regional objectives aligned to national strategy.
- As part of this, the postholder will be required to connect national communications strategy and priorities to regional and local communications planning to ensure a coherence of NHS communications across all audiences.
- They will also be responsible for ensuring that statutory communications requirements are delivered effectively.
- In the medium term, working with the Regional Director and Director of Transformation, this role will be responsible for overseeing the design, assurance and handover of communications activity to STPs and ICS’ maintaining professional standards during this change.

- Reporting directly to the Director of Communications and the Regional Director, the regional head of strategic communications will take a wider leadership role in the region’s strategy development and implementation.
- The postholder will be an integral member of the regional executive team, the regional leadership team and the wider national NHSE communications leadership team.
- The postholder is a member of the national NHSE communications team but is deployed to deliver the entire communications function for the region. This can be a complex arrangement to successfully navigate, and the post holder will be an expert in building mutually beneficial relationships and a skilled negotiator.
- The role will provide strategic counsel on communications and engagement issues, to the Regional Director and their senior leadership team helping inform effective decision-making with the needs of patients and the communities we serve at the heart of everything we do.
- This role will develop and maintain their own relationships with senior leaders, such as provider CEOs, ICB CEOs and Chairs, across the region to champion good communications and engagement in the local NHS.
- The role will also provide strategic counsel on communications to provider, ICS leaders and provide expert advice in times of intense scrutiny.
