Duties and responsibilities:

- Help students recognise the barriers to learning created by their differences and support them in developing strategies to address these barriers. This could include a focus on coping with anxiety and stress, managing social communication and integration, concentration difficulties, time management, prioritising workload and creating a suitable work-life balance or more practically focused on how to access to digital lectures or online notes.
- Share experience, relevant information and issues relating to welfare, support and academic progress with other Student Services teams, and academic staff, as appropriate, and to ensure DSA funding, support, equipment and reasonable adjustments are in place for students.
- Maintain regular contact with the Autism Team and liaise with the Lead Autism Mentor and wider Disability Advice and Support team, and work in accordance with confidentiality and data protection policies in all cases.
- Use professional knowledge and expertise to engage students, including those reluctant to access services.
- Use negotiating and strong communication skills, both verbal and non-verbal, to manage situations of conflict and use initiative to find a suitable solution to support the student most effectively
- Occasionally able to work outside normal working hours including evenings and weekends

Skills and experience:

- Educated to Degree level
- A willingness to complete the required comprehensive training in adult autism (as per DSA QAG requirements)
- In depth knowledge and experience of working with adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders
- Proactive in identifying concerns with academic performance or regarding overall wellbeing, being able to respond in a calm, assertive and practical way in order to identify appropriate support
